If you've worked with Windows 7 for any length of time, you're sure to have come across this error sooner or later. Most of the time it's relatively easy fix involving the registry, which you can find here (this works for Vista, windows 7 and 8: User Profile Service failed the sign-in - Fix in Windows 8 However this one laptop was not playing ball. I'd ran through all of the above steps, and nothing, no new accounts could be created, the guest account wasn't working and I was in a state of confusion. After reaching the third page of Google, I found an unlikely solution here: Windows 7: "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded THe problem was, Windows Live wasn't installed on this laptop, but I thought the idea was sound, so I tried this: Browse to C:\Users\Default (ensure you can see hidden files and folders) Right click AppData Choose Security Advanced Change permissions Edit Everyone and give them Full Control Click Okay Then click on the tick box next to Replace all child permissions with inheritable permissions from this object Click Apply then Yes to the Security warning Amazingly, this solved the issue, so my assumption is that if a file in the Default User profile has it's permissions screwed up, new accounts can't be created. Since every other solution was either to go back to a system restore point or rebuild the machine, I thought it worth blogging on here as it might save someone a lot of time and effort!

To answer my own question, it really helps if you read the manual. You have to hold down the Num button whilst inputting the code, seems obvious now but it wasn't at the time!

Anyone had an issue with an Epson projector that simply won't accept any input from a remote control? Our Epson is asking for a password, which I know, but I can on;y turn the projector on or off with the remote, not enter the code! I've tried with a different epson remote with no dice either...

Thanks @Driftingashore "bought" garageband when the full version was made free over the Christmas holidays. I just entered the school apple ID on the off chance it would allow me to make a one off payment, and it fully enabled garageband. Not going to worry about it for the time being, unless the Music teacher expands her iPad requirements.

Was just about to start to use VPP for this very purpose, and I'm glad I found this thread before I did! So what's the consensus? 1, You have to setup each iPad with it's own Apple ID and make the in App purchase with that ID? The only way I can see that as being viable is to buy a £5 iTunes giftcard for each iPad, and then you'll be left with £2.01 on each account, which is less than ideal. 2, Buy the App on one iPad and copy that configuration across the other iPads? Sounds easy, and also illegal! It beggars belief that Apple have done this to one of their flagship apps that an awful lot of schools are going to want to use!

Have you checked that DNS has a reverse lookup zone for that IP address range?

Point him in the direction of Office 365 instead? You can keep Office, and it's available at home for staff and students for free...

I've also had a similar issue when the Status bar is enabled. I'd also recommend turning off preview too!

We are moving a 1/2 hour PSH period that already exists from Period 6 (14:30 - 15:00) To Period 1, currently 08:30 - 09:30. So the end result will be: Old 08:30-09:30 Period 1 Periods 2-5 14:30-15:00 Period 6 (PSH) New 08:30-08:50 Period 1 (PSH) 08:50-09:50 Period 2 (old Period 1)

Or do as @tmcd35 said, that sounds like a good deal!

If this was going to be a media heavy ICT suite, or used for Kodu or any other 3D based software, then I would definitely add £22 for a graphics card, like a GeForce 210. If I were looking for a core i5 machine, then a HP Pro 4300 would probably fit the bill, £330 on Misco with cashback. But I would add a graphics card, or SSD, or both to that.

Then add an extra £50 per PC to my budget. Would still keep the SSDs, but if you needed to keep costs down, they could be scrapped with an i5 machine. I wonder which would login quicker, a slower core2duo machine with an SSD drive, or a core i5 machine with standard hard drive. If I ever get a chance, I'll test that... Just out of curiosity, what do you expect to hit processor speeds over the next 5 years? Office and Windows aren't particularly processor heavy, and a graphics card is more useful for graphical programs such as Photoshop, Premier or Kodu. All other software that my teaching staff have been interested in has been cloud based (GCSEpod, mangahigh etc). Not that I don't want to have core i5 machines, its just I can't see what's coming that my school would need them for.

Hmm, some rough estimates, and assuming you want value for money rather top end kit: 35 refurbed HP DC7800 at £125 each 35 Kingston 60gb SSD drives at £36 each 21.5" LED Monitor w/HDMI connection at £100 each Targus compact keyboard at £6 each Mouse at £4 each PC total = £271 per PC £9485 total Say £2000 for IWB, plus speakers plus installation Around £400 for a colour printer, I like HP but many people like Kyocera Network cabling is tricky, I tend to ask the electricians to run the network cable when they're putting in the electrics, and I terminate both ends. Assuming you need electrics as well, could be £100 per double socket (electric and network)? In which case you might want Y leads for the PC, leaving a power socket for the Raspberry Pi, so £3500 for cabling. Benching tends to be £100 per metre, so again could be another £3500 depending on the layout of the room. I have no idea on chairs, probably need something to fit H&S standards, so height adjustable. Last ones I got were from Isis concepts, and were about £50 each, so £1750. Network switch would have to match your current system, mine would be two 48 port HP switches, so around £800 per switch, £1600 total. If it's a new cabinet, add another £400 plus extra to run either Cat5e or Fibre to your Main switch. So lets see, a total of around £23,500, plus Y-leads, VGA leads and HDMI cables. But that's a fairly budget PC, sped up with a SSD drive. Will cope with everything our school could throw at it, but YMMV!

As I and the school data manager feared then, not a simple job! I can't see a way around it, staff will just have to put up with a skewed timetable from now until the end of the year. Going to drive Reception crazy chasing missing registers!

Thankfully this one isn't coming under my remit, but I've been asked to look into how it could be done. Essentially, the school wants to move it's PSH (Tutor) period from the end of the school day, to the start. However, I can't find anything in SIMS.net that relates to times of the day, or the order in which periods are set. My assumption then would be that this is a NOVA6 issue, which I no nothing about, but would be grateful for any guidance from anyone! 1, How does a school change the timing for its periods? 2, Can a timetable be changed in the middle of an academic year without losing Attendance data or Course memberships? Any help most appreciated.

Could try adding %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\* Or you could change the 'Designated File Types' and remove .lnk (shortcut) files.

Have you tried Ni Nu Kuni? Highly recommend it as it basically is Pokémon with a better battle system!

Apologies for the thread necromancy, but we're experiencing the same issue here, along with registers that have been taken showing as missing registers. It was meant to be fixed in the summer release of SIMS, but it doesn't appear to have been, at least not for us. Trying to use the Supportnet website is like pulling teeth, so wondered if anyone had a fix for this? Thanks.

I'll just add that if you want a quick way to install software onto an image, I highly recommend ninite.com - One quick and easy installer that automatically disables add-ons, toolbars and other spyware.

I had issues with HP Dc7700's going to sleep and not being able to wake up without a hard power off and power on... YMMV

Should Google be unblocked and they want safe search enforced, redirect them to Safe Find - Safe Google Search - a Google custom search that enforces safe search and allows for image search too.

Could it be saved in their profile? Try creating a new user and see if they can see their Library, if that user can, then it could be a profile issue...
