At the moment, it's just one student pushing the boundaries of my security. But it's a concern that I can't block this access, at least not without either potentially bricking the PCs through excessive permissions, or preventing shortcut creation.

A nice security flaw in Windows 7 that I wondered if anyone else has fixed, as I can't find an elegant solution. Student logs in, right clicks in My Documents - New - Shortcut, types in C:\ and there you go, complete access to the C:\ Drive. This is despite having a GPO that is meant to restrict access to C: (How To Restrict Access To Drives In My Computer In Windows - How-To Geek). I could prevent users from creating shortcuts (I think) however it is a mandatory part of the OCR or Cambridge Nationals ICT course, and would probably cause more trouble than it's worth. I'm loathe to change permissions on the C: drive as that tends to cause a lot of issues, and changing permissions on C:\Windows (the main folder I want to protect) appears to be a big no no. Any other ideas?

After the third box of headphones, I've given up. Instead we rely on students having their own, and our Resources Centre sells earphones to students who don't have any as they are a requirement for Music lessons. In fairness, I think the vast majority of our students have earphones or headphones now, especially as we don't confiscate phones or iPods.

Another possibility is the following: I believe that students either accidentally click "Work Offline" from their My Documents, or the PC goes offline, making their My Documents offline automatically. This has the effect of making the entire shared folder, eg \\\2009\ offline, and it doesn't automatically come online once the connection is re-established. Therefore when another student of the same year group (Or has their My Documents in \\\2009) tries to use the PC, the connection fails as the PC still sees that folder as offline. Once logged in as a student of that year group, and click "Work Online" from their My Documents, the problem is solved. I'm looking at a centralised fix, preferable through group policy. I'm aware this thread is a bit dead, but thought this info might help someone struggling with this issues as it's had me perplexed since I installed Windows 7 across the school!

Tried installing it on Server 2008R2 and it simply wouldn't let me during install. At some point I'll get a virtualised Server 2003 running for it...

The reason Word still capitalizes the first letter is something to do with Paragraph styles. If you prevent autoformat from applying paragraph styles and/or preserving paragraph styles, Word no longer automatically capitalises the first letter. I've yet to find a way of implementing it through Group Policy however...

I've also renamed computers by selecting the above in my WDS server properties. I create an Admin account with the username I want to call the PCs, for example Media, drop the account into the correct desktop OU, then build the PCs with that account. It will then automatically put the PCs into the right OU, and name the Cs sequentially (Media1, Media 2 etc) so I don't have to remember. Largely because I had little joy with unattend.xml files, other than to copy the default profile over, so thought I'd show another option. I would recommend disabling the accounts once you've finished building the suite though!

Something I'm looking at here (though login times aren't that slow) is to put laptops and desktops into sleep Mon-Thursday, and only setting a full shutdown Friday evening. Haven't tested it, but should certainly make your boot times quicker...

The way my county council do it is to have an intranet/internet page, force it as the homepage of IE, then set IE to automatically load up on login. It's annoying, but it does work...

I don't think the server key needs to be KMS to be a KMS host, I know mine isn't...

How did you inject the driver and how do you deploy your images? I ask because I'm fairly certain, though willing to be corrected, that when you sysprep a device, it strips the drivers out of the image being captured. To inject a driver into an image, assuming you are using WDS, you need to inject the driver like so:

We installed Pegasus Email and let them use that, seemed easy enough for students to quickly grasp what they needed to do without the need for setting up a profile.

Anyone bought a refurbished printer from ICT Direct? I wouldn't normally be tempted, but £180 for a HP4250 is an absolute steal if the quality is there.

Do you notice a quicker login tome when it doesn't redirect? I've got the same issue with a clean build and a dummy account, and I think it's profile related as the mandatory student profile works absolutely fine. Sadly the PC I was using had to be used elsewhere, so I can't go back to it to do further tests.

Does anybody use Printer Ink Cartridges, Cheap Printer Inks - Cartridge Shop I've tried through fax and email to set up a Credit Account, but haven't heard anything back from them. I've got the following: UAC: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Elevate without prompting UAC: Behavior of the elevation prompt for standard users - Automatically deny elevation requests UAC: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation - Disabled UAC: Only elevate executables that are signed and validated - Disabled UAC: Only elevate UIAccess applications that are installed in secure locations - Disabled UAC: User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Disabled UAC: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation - Disabled Almost certainly some unneccessary options set there, but the students definately don't have UAC inflicted upon them, which was causing an issue for me with Quicktime and logging in.

For Year 7 we'll introduce Kodu: Kodu - Microsoft Research For Year 8, Scratch: Scratch | Home | imagine, program, share For Year 9, Small Basic: Microsoft Small Basic We're also considering Robomind (RoboMind.net - Welcome to RoboMind.net, the new way to learn programming) and Alice (Alice.org) Whilst these are GUI intensive, they allow for the entire class to get involved, even those with low reading and writing abilities. Those who "get" programming and computing will love the software and will want to explore further whilst those who may not understand the actual coding element, will still be able to create something that works. Definitely interested in Notepad++ for those students who really get the hang of it!

Having an issue with Office 2007 and 2010 not picking up on .asd files in the autorecover location. I've set, through Group Policy, the Auto Recovery folder to be the Z:\ drive (Students My Docs) and after 15 minutes Word auto saves the files on the z:\ drive with no issue. However, should the student not be able to save, and reloads Word after a reboot or relogon, Word doesn't pick up on the .asd file, and it remains there forever more. I've tried using my Office install with the Auto recover location kept as the default, but with no joy either. I copy the .asd file into the location, but Word ignores it on start up. Is there a setting I've overlooked, a button to press? I'd even settle for a way of opening .asd files on their own so I could recover students work if necessary.

Trust me, he's an excellent ICT teacher He's introduced GCSE Computing to the school, introduced teaching Scratch, Kodu, Small Basic and Robomind to KS3, and is dead set against making the students only learn Office, and wants to make ICT fun, all of which I fully agree with. What I don't agree with is giving him even more work to do in reconfiguring his schemes of work, and the amount of training he would have to give, to save the school an amount of money that it's happy to spend to ensure we're fully licensed and upto date. Once the Year 11's have gone, we're rolling out Office 2010, and he'll be more than happy to look at Windows 8 when released.
