Not that it will help much in fixing it but if you use IPv6 can you connect to the Machine? therefore isolating it to the IP stack?

Have you tried changing the network adapter from the Hyper V one to a Legacy Network Adapter and see if that makes any difference? encase there's a problem between the driver for the NIC and the updates?

I thought that IIS connections didn't need CALS... but you did need an SQL Per Processor Licence, for any Internet available DB... what will be more interesting is trying to get the two factor authentication in place, that is fast becoming a requirement by the Govt for sensitive data...

WE just use a TS 2008 server, you can install a TS gateway on any 2k8 server with IIS and that way you can get a nice secure (over ssl) RDP connection to pcs / Terminal Servers in side the building.

i fixed this the otherday so i thought i should say what i did encase anyone else comes acropper The Terminal Server was using cert signed by my CA, compname.internal.lan by changing the cert to a auto generated one the Win7 clients then started to connect just fine :-) The TS gateway kept its Real world signed Cert

TeeJay did you do this bascially? Backup Cert as per ms guidelines REmove CA Services Demote the DC ?Destroy original SErver ?Make new Virtual Server or ?Virtualizes the existing demoted server Reinstall Certificate Services. Thanks Gordon.

Here is my reply from Serco regarding CMIS, i got today At the minute we don't have any time scales on when we will be implementing these guidelines from BECTA. The main reason for this is that there are no clear guidelines about which fields are which impact level and also which combinations of fields raise the impact level, until such things are finalised we will not be able to implement the guidelines in a consistent and accurate manner. Updated guidelines are going to be released in the next few weeks and we will be reviewing them, however any work we do will not be included in the April release of Facility.

we use DFS and have CS3 and it does work ok. we had to have List folder content for authenticated users all the way down the DFS tree to the users folder for things to work correctly. we found that this was enough and that read access wasn't needed explicitly

that's one of the Docs I read... but does state that the Server must have the same name as the previous CA Server. which kinda may not be possible, as I wanted to keep the previous server name for the SQL to save a lot of re config on Sharepoint etc... The Other issue is that according to the Docs to go 2003 -> 2008 you need to do an inplace upgrade either before you move the CA on original server or after you move the CA on the new Server. to complicate it some more the 2k3 is 32-bit and the new DB server will be 2K8x64 i was hoping to move the CA to a virtual 32 bit 2k3 server with a new Name and leave the DB Server with the original name and just being a DB server... Just wondering if any has ever moved there CA before ?

Has anyone decommissioned a DC that is currently the CA authority? I was hoping to bring a new member server up with the same name but running 2008 as our SQL Server, since the current box performs the same role. And create a New Member server (probably a virtual one) to host the CA (as it looks like your not supposed to put a CA on a DC oops..) It looks horribly complicated to move a CA off a DC, i get the impression that i have either rename the new CA as the same or ails it. Has anyone been through this process? i was also considering destroying and re-creating the CA but i guess this will have implications on any one who has EFS Certs? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Has anyone started to come up with a way of classifying all those files that already exist on the network with the appropriate required impact level and delete securely or shred footers? If so who has been tasked with it / how has it been delegated? Has anyone made any templates etc? do we need to tidy up shared network space and make special folders that say IL2 -Protected and IL3 - Restricted. is this even the right thread to as the question? you can use something called Install Tailor to make MSTs it takes you through the MSI instalation and captures your answers and makes the MST. I have one of the last free vers if you cant find it let me know. Gordon.

Having just seen all the becta bombshell of best /good practice.. i have too realised i need to encrypt usb sitcks and any laptops that go off site... my question is more on this guide... http://schools.becta.org.uk/upload-dir/downloads/audit_logging.pdf firstly what do we need to log in reality? it looks to me from reading it.. i basically need all the security logs from my DCs.. i script a log in and out to a SQL DB so this too would be useful (though currently use a stored procedure to remove records older than 32 days so the db didn't grow massive, but holds enough to follow querys up). it looks like i need to keep all my externally available IIS server logs.. it looks like the MIS (in our case CMIS) logs too... now the more important question is can we automate this process... the windows security logs just over write them selves after so long... and don't "archive" them selves off.. the other thing that looked manualish time consuming is the moving of the logs on to read only media.. the becta report seemed to imply this should be done regularly implying that once a week was poor / high risk. has anyone started to look at this yet?

have you looked at winisnstall LE that will give you basic snap shot to MSI then you can just deploy them through GPO.. there was a last free version floating around the net... also Advanced installer which is also free i find really useful for pushing out files, or reg keys.. where you manually package up the MSI... i do this if i need to put files on a PC or Reg keys into its registry... I used ZenWorks a long long time ago probably 10 years ago was pretty good back then... did you clock the Novel Engs comments that the new ver works in a pure ms environment?

i've seen sophos pick this up when kids stick memory sticks into the machiens... since sophos emails me about the threats its detected and cleaned.... i guess the key is to use software restrictions policies to stop anything being executed from paths other than where you have "programs" that way it has less chance of getting in in the first place!
