Thanks for the help Tom, unfortunately I already have that GPO set in my Default domain Policy so its a no go. I do have some more info though! It seems that IE has picked up the new settings on my servers and on almost all domain PCs, its just my PC and the other Technicians! The only difference I can think of is that we have 64bit Win7!? its very strange but I will continue to fiddle with it and see where it gets me!

Morning All, got a bit of a strange one here but I hope someone can help. We have a wpad.dat setup and deployed successfully which defines some local proxy exceptions for sites which we have hosted locally on the LAN. This has worked for months with no problems (and is still working today!). However, I edited the wpad.dat file yesterday to add another exception (for a new site we are setting up) and IE is still trying to go through the Proxy to get to it. I have followed the instructions at Troubleshooting Automatic Detection to force a refresh of the file but it isnt playing a ball. To make things even more confusing, I have Google chrome setup to use the Proxy settings from IE (therefore use the same wpad) and it has picked up the new exception! Does anyone know of a hack I can use to force this to refresh in IE? I have this WPAD in use on the whole network so using Google Chrome just isnt an option unfortunately any help would be hugely appreciated.

Evening All! I have been setting up IIS Printing for our staff so they can connect to some of our network printers easily (without the need to involve me in the process...) and it is working quite well. However it is currently displaying all of our printers on the print server and some of them are supposed to be kept hidden! does anyone know how I can hide certain printers from the IIS Printing page? I would rather not manually edit the ASP pages (if I can avoid it). the printers I want hidden are not set to be "listed in the directory" so I am slightly baffled as to why they are listed on the web page. Any help would be hugely appreciated, although I am beginning to think I should just remove the Role Service and then just add it again!

We bought 34 of their 'Business Line' of Desktops for one of our IT Suites and they have been brilliant to be honest! The Mobo's are made by Foxxconn (which is by no means a blessing) so at least they are a recognisable brand and they came with Core 2 Duo CPUs so they cope with Windows 7 brilliantly. I am typing this reply on one right now (although this one is Quad Core cos it is my one for my office desk ). Only bought them about 5 or 6 months ago so I cant say anything about longevity but they have been great so far hope that helped

Evening All, Recently got my new Work Desktop (Quad Core, 4GB RAM, Win 7 Pro x64) and have completed the migration from my old (Very Old) XP Box and have noticed that the Remote Desktops Tool isn't included in the RSAT. I believe it wasn't available in the Vista Version either and have done a quick google (site:edugeek.net of course) and found that it is possible to patch the old XP version to work on Vista. So this leave me with 2 Questions if someone will oblige. 1) Is there any chance that we might see this tool released again? 2) if not, and I manage to get the old AdminPak.msi to work on my win7 Machine, will it be using RDP v6+ because my PC is running that version or is it going to be a security risk? I hope it isnt Game Over for the Remote Desktops Tool, This thing saved me lots of time (in tiny doses of course but they add up!). Anyone got it working?

I am also having trouble with the saving of files to the root of the user folder (as per your image) and haven't yet found a solution. Temporarily bypassing the problem by disabling Libraries alltogether (as documented a couple of times here on edugeek ) and enabling "user config \ policies \ admin templates \start menu and taskbar \ remove user folder link from start menu in" Group Policy to remove the link to the folder in the start menu. I have done some googling about the pinned items in the start menu (and the new win7 taskbar) and haven't had much luck unfortunately. All I could find was this --> The Deployment Guys : Pin Items to the Start Menu or Windows 7 Taskbar via Script There should be Policies for this kind of thing! Microsoft needs to get it sorted ASAP and give us more GPOs to configure Win 7. Does anyone know if we can expect this kind of update? I dont really like the idea of using Reg Hacks and Patching to Get our New Win7 Machines working (just bought 120 of them!).

check out http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-7/47835-windows-7-gotchas-tips-fyi.html for the answer to your wallpaper issue. to sort the aero theme, export the admx files from a windows 7 machine and import them to the group policy central store on the server. That should allow you to use the policies for win7 (even on win 2003 domain) and set it to aero hope that helps mate

Thanks guys, I have just been reading about the Win 7 Enterprise Edition. Can someone shed some light on the diference between a MAK Key and the VLK used by Enterprise? if it is any easier than the pain that is KMS then I am already sold!

Evening All I have just signed our school up for the Microsoft Schools Agreement (Going Win 7 for IT Suites and Staff Laptops) and am wondering whether I am entitled to the x64 Versions of Windows as well as the x86 as part of my Agreement? This is going to be my first experience of being directly responsible for our licensing so I don't have a huge amount of experience with the VLSC etc but I would guess that I just login, download the install media and retrieve a license key like normal? is that right or is my inner noob clearly on display? cheers in advance

Have only had limited time to look at the problem due to inheriting the worst network ever (thats another story though....conficker......tattooed registry with entries that point to servers that dont exist......lack of security updates......no antivirus console installed for updates/monitoring etc etc.....) but i will try firefox tomorow morning and get back to you (new Techie started yesterday so have been trying to help him settle) Will give a testpupil a go with local admin rights, and see what happens. Although i suspect the problem lies in admins having a different set of IE GPs to students and staff (I didn't design them, i just inherited them...). Ticking the Box for HTTP 1.1 through proxy seems to have helped a bit so i suspect that there is an obscure setting somewhere else in the IE GPs that i have missed. Cheers mate, will try the meta refresh for staff ( Head has created an online web page for staff with Google Calendar, Googlemail etc. i deployed desktop links for this to staff but they had to refresh). In the end i setup sharepoint which then has a link to the page and works fine since it isnt the first page it loads but it would be better if this would work - thanks webman - Useful tip I am beginning to think it would be best just to copy the policies from My admins OU and test it changing one setting at a time - time consuming but guaranteed to work. If Meta Refresh can keep the Staff / Head happy in the meantime then i will be forever in your debt!

That seems to have done the job (sort of). I can now launch new windows from an already open window but cant target the first ie window at anything external (have tried adding desktop shortcut to ucas.co.uk and it still just hangs and needs a refresh). It seems to have sorted out my google search on my Sharepoint site though (opens results page in new window) so thanks a lot webman

I am currently having issues with IE (seems to affect IE6, 7 and 8). When users try to launch a new IE window where it is targeted at an external page (or set through home page) IE hangs for a couple of minutes before finally giving up and displaying "this page cannot be found". If i refresh the page it works perfectly! I have tested this in a few scenarios and have discovered that it does not affect Admins (only staff and Students) and that it is definately only External pages that dont load as IE works fine when it is set to open our local Intranet Site. I suspect that this is being caused by something in IE Group Policy but am a little bit stumped (and hugely overworked since the other IT Technician Resigned out of the blue at the start of September). I have already tried checking Bloxx Login Scripts (LEA Provide our internet Connection/ Filtering etc etc), Have tried disabling IE Popup Blocker (no luck) and have avoided the problem by installing Sharepoint Services and setting as homepage but really need to get this sorted.... any advice would be hugely appreciated
