Apologies for not giving advance notice on the suspension of the SOLUS service which was due to planned maintenance. Unfortunately our man who normally posts these notices was struck down by a pretty serious illness and our process wasn’t strong enough to catch that.

You don't need to upgrade FMS to close the financial year. The CFR requirements were issued in October for 2009/10 - the spring release updates the CFR return and the header in the XML file has been updated. You do need the spring release to produce the new CFR but that is not the same as closing the year. Usually the CFR is produced May/June after all the adjustments have been made. -
Matt, I made the mistake of taking five day's leave - hence I've been quiet but thanks for your support in my absence!! We support and by that I mean thoroughly test on up to 3 server operating systems - if we dropped support for 2003 there would be a whole set of other complaints. I can assure you that we pay market rates for developers & testers and we have lots of them. I won't comment on Wikipedia save to say that it isn't exactly unbiased. The District Auditor approved the settlement that Bedfordshire received.

Not sure what's been said by whom and have made sure that the desks know the position which is: We support both 64 and 32 bit variants of Windows Server 2003 and 2008 and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future as many schools have 32 bit Servers. We do not currently support Windows Server 2008 R2 for SIMS and have no plans to do so in 2010 but we will be supporting this for SLG (for the Application tier and ADPS server) from the Summer 2010 release.

Localzuk, I've got hold of the NDA and the wording that you quote isn't isn't there. I'm not saying that it wasn't but this is what it says: "a)The documentation will not be used to reengineer or decompile the SIMS software to allow the development of software that competes with SIMS or any of it’s modules that may exist on the date the documentation (TPID) is produced. It is envisaged parties may produce software that competes with SIMS and use this documentation to produce an interface between the products." Hopefully this is clearer.

"so have come to learn just how awkward it is to do things on." My guess is that you haven't had training and haven't discovered short cuts. FMS is hugely popular in 1000's of schools, even when people move away from SIMS they stick with FMS. I know it looks dated!

Also don't forget the electronic ordering which can save you more than you pay for the software!

I'll certainly take a look at it because I can see what you mean however it is clear that TPs do use our data access code to write into SIMS with applications that compete directly. What I am aware of is that it is possible to use our data access code/database (that have cost us literally millions) and put a new skin on it very easily and cheaply and that we do frown upon.

Just for the record our partner agreement does not say that a company cannot compete with Capita. There is a clause that says that a third party "shall not be in breach of" damaging sales simply by having a competing product. You only have to look at the partners we have to see that we do not insist on not competing. There is a clause that says that you can't take our code and then broadcast things about it. However anyone that reads the press will know that companies have printed negative things about us and they are still a partner. Free speach is allowed and negative comments are how any company can see where it needs to improve.

Report writing - Sims Profiles or?? (something idiot proof )

SIMS allows you to create reports based on a class; it is used successfully by lots of primary schools. It is true that for the specialist areas a timetable is ideal but it isn't strickly necessary. -
We do offer a chargable service (it is not automated) that will take over a lot more than the CTF data.

I've had this checked out. The Teacher’s View displays a maximum of three contact telephone numbers if there is only one Priority 1 contact and for some reason if there is a Home Fax number, it displays the Fax number instead of the Home telephone number. This is a bug that needs to be resolved.

I've had this checked now and as I thought we do support SIMS on VM. We've made sure all of our support desk staff are clear on this now.
