Thanks for all the suggestions. Can't be the machine name as I've tried changing it, and can't be a corrupt profile on the machine because I clean installed it, and it hung up on the first logon! Thanks for the ideas though. I think this might be the one: Now you mention it, I seem to remember having difficulties here before! Cheers for that

Hi all, I have this rather annoying laptop that won't connect to the domain. Whenever you try to log on as a domain user, it goes through the process as it should, right until the 'Applying Computer Settings...' stage, where is locks and will not go any further. Standard XP Pro installation, trying to connect to a vanilla W2k3 server, wired connection, other computers connected to the same switch are fine, internet is fine if logged on as local admin. I'm tearing my hair out with it now. Even tried a complete wipe and re-install, but exactly the same thing happens. Any ideas? Cheers!

Just had an idea... don't know if it's possible, but how about getting the Eee PC linux onto an xbox?! That would make for a pretty cool little mini PC.

Yep, I'd second that. I had a Grandstream IP phone at home for a while, and it wasn't the best. It was a more basic one than localzuk had, but although it worked, it had annoying foibles. Also, the AC adaptor gave up after about 6 months too which was a pain.

Same here - I'm not keen on the sound of CRTs monitors (or TVs come to that) in a very quiet room even when that haven't started to go!

I'm with John on this, 4 pairs, but substituting the Timberland boots for a cheap pair of Karrimor walking boots.

Well said Tony. Surely the debate here should be Is pay fair for all of us? not this attitude that teachers shouldn't get more money because we dont. Working in education isn't an easy touch for any of us, and I personally like to think that we can all work together - and it happens in my experience. And no, I'm not a teacher, but I do have several good friends who are, and they certain work a lot harder and longer hours than the general opinion seems to be here.

A small army? What, say 20? Now, how many in a class...? I rest my case. Worrying indeed.

And the fact that they are blooming good laptops. Four of my schools have laptop trolleys, one of them being MacBooks. I get far less problems with the MacBooks than all the others - the battery life is better, bits don't fall off, the screens don't die after what seems like two minutes (like about 6 Acers I can think of...) Admittedly, running them with XP seems half-hearted and expensive, but I can see the benefits of software compatibility - it took my lot ages to realise that most of the ed software in school was Windows only and wouldn't work.

What about those of us that don't have an 'IT Office' though?!

Can't help but think it sounds like they want an ICT Teacher on the cheap...

Well, I revisited my troublesome beast today, and since giving it another new printhead last Tuesday and replacing the ink to HP, it seems to be a happy bunny again! I've now made my feelings on fake ink very clear!

Thanks for that, very illuminating... Needless to say, I have strongly recommended that fake inks are no longer used! Unfortunately, it's already been swapped back to an HP cartridge, so goodness knows what reactions are going on in there now! I'll have a try to get it sorted tomorrow and feedback. Cheers!

I've got an HP A3 Business Inkjet (can't remember the model, but know uses the 10/11 carts and print heads) which has just started doing this, but with cyan. It started shortly after the bursar fed it with a cheap fake cartridge, co-incidentally, from IJT (I believe). It has since knackered another two print heads, even after changing back to HP inks. With this one, they don't completely stop working, but get to the point that only a handful of nozzles work. The sod is, the print heads don't work in any other printer afterwards either. God, I hate fake ink!

I've got a number of these, and they're not good are they!? I was very disappointed in them for Toshiba machines, which I always thought were a safe brand for good quality. I don't think the power supply issue is unusual though - HP made me send a laptop (at their expense) to Poland of all places when the power supply went duff. The silliest thing was, they specifically told me NOT to send the power supply with it! Fast service though, UPS collected on Tuesday and returned it to me the following Monday, basically untouched, but with a new PSU in the box! After the experience, I think it's HP for me from now on.

Isn't it just a very fancy and protracted way of talking about bringing the curriculum and admin systems closer together?

Surely, though, if you wanted to get around the issue, you could simply issue the laptops with an official prohibition on any use of the machines other than for school-related purposes, but with an un-official policy of not enforcing the ban, as long as such use is reasonable, appropriate and legal. I suppose this might not be the 'right' thing to do, but it is a way around it. I know if I was a teacher and I was going to be taxed because I took a laptop home to work on it, I would be refusing to take the machine home, and therefore, to do work from home.

I don't know if this is related, but I have found an issue with Photo Story not opening files properly if WMV files are not associated with Windows Media Player. One of our teachers installed VLC and let it take over all video file associations and that broke Photo Story until I reset the association.

Battery life seems pretty good to me - I've got one, and I think the Brain Training is pretty good. The only thing with them is if you want to use any of the wifi features, it (annoyingly) doesn't support WPA - only WEP is available.

Yep, second this one. We have even had a Promethean power pack disappear completely! And I'm not joking! Luckily it resurfaced a few days later, but we never did figure out how it came disconnected from the back of the board and got carted away! And it wasn't a child either.
