Not a Microsoft fanboy at all (actually typing this from Firefox on Mac OS X on a MacBook ), just personally find Windows easier to use than Linux. Sorry Wouldn't 2000 Pro be as heavy (is not heavier) than XP on resources? Agree it would be preferable to Me though!

I've just had a thought - it may be heresy, but for those of us that are not keen on Linux and would prefer some sort of Windows on the machine, is it possible to install something like Windows Me? I know, I know, we all hate WinMe But was thinking it can do most of the things you'd want on a tiddly device like the eeepc, but without the demands of full-blown XP. What do you all reckon? Chris.

AutoIt Scripts need to be compiled with AutoIt, or run through an interpreter. For an easier time, put maniac's code into notepad, and save it as a text file with .vbs as the extension - then it'll just work!

I've got an ISO of a bootable CD with DOS 6 and Windows 3.1 that should work on a VM if that's any interest! If it was a serious request, PM me and I'll see what I can do.

One that did the rounds in one of my schools last year was Turkey Shooter - I'm not exactly sure myself what it is, but I know several of the teachers and most of the kids found it extremely funny! And it's festive :-)

Upgrading memory on a MacBook is pretty simple: Take out the battery. Look around the inner edges of the battery opening, and you will see an L shaped metal bracket held in with screws. Undo the screws, and remove the L bracket. On the long edge, you should find the memory slots. Both slots may well already be occupied though. Obviously, you then remove the old memory, and slot the replacements into the vacated sockets. Finally, replace the L bracket, do the screws back up and put the battery back. Job done! :-)

OK, so who can suggest some decent networked colour laser printers? They will be to replace a couple of Minolta Magicolor 2300DLs which are costing a lot to run and getting a bit long in the tooth. They handle all the printing needs of the school, so need to be reliable, robust, fast and reasonable on consumables cost. Initial price is not too much of a problem, although I'd prefer not to spend more than £500 each. Ideas please! Cheers, Chris.

Hi all, I am looking for a free alternative to the likes of NetOp School, Lanschool, AB Tutor etc. Does anyone know of anything out there? I am going to be running an ICT club after Christmas and some sort of tool to let me view pupil's screens would be great so we can all share each others work. I'm probably the only person who would use it though, so I can't get money to buy anything. Any ideas? Cheers, Chris.

Not entirely, but I have seen a dramatic reduction in the incidence of problems in my schools since I started. They had no technician time beforehand, but with the introduction of regular attention, the systems are mainly self sufficient. I don't get as far as being involved with lesson planning, but I do see myself as ICT support - meaning I provide support for the teaching of ICT. At the end of the day, in a school, the pupils and their learning is what everyone should be concerned with. And if that means putting down the screwdriver and picking up a National Curriculum once in a while to help a teacher without a clue on ICT, so be it. Surely it's doing the different things like that that keep us in school rather than going off to the corporate world where the bigger money is.

How about talking to someone like PAT - they already have the PAtT section that is for non-teaching staff in schools - perhaps some sort of alliance could be formed with them (or someone like them) to create a good package for us techies? I specifically avoided Unison because I thought they seemed too close to the councils for comfort.

I think that's an excellent suggestion! I'm all for it & would certainly be interested in making it become a reality. As great an idea as this is, hasn't it already been discussed quite seriously and at some length, with the conclusion that it'd be far too difficult?

I flew Leeds - Southampton back from a conference back in August, with Flybe for quite a bit cheaper than the train. Having said that, you need to take good care looking for train tickets - they don't always make the cheap fares obvious, and bear in mind with Virgin West Coast you need to look at SINGLE fares - they don't do cheap returns, you just get two cheap singles. I did Havant to Birmingham for about £20 each way like that in the summer.

Unfortunately, if his contract is anything like mine, he can! All my contracts (from the LA) include a clause 'and other duties as directed by the headteacher'. I think you might be over a barrel on this one mate, though I'd have to agree it seems misguided and that the network is going to suffer for it.

I don't like the way that some of the LapSafe trolleys cut the power to all of the chargers every time you open the door. They tend to get left plugged in when the laptops are being taken out, so at the start and end of the lesson, the chargers must get toggled on and off at least 10 times! Can't do them any good.
