Money spent on server-room AC is rarely money wasted - and its not the sort of thing that often gets much love (as it appears to be doing its job). Also, if you spend enough, you may be able to keep an emergency beer cold in the server room. Another "must have" for those days when the s--t hits the fan

We're looking for a new Education Sales type in SmoothWall Leeds. I know a few hang out on here, but I'm also looking for recommendations from people on here. Have you a favourite salesperson we could poach? Someone who has a good understanding of what you want, and is tech minded - as you know were not the pushy "ring you every week and irritate you" sort of people. Decided not to put this in "jobs" as i'm more looking for recommendations than applications - but those are welcome too. As usual - be broad minded. Can vouch for John's tie-ishness - he came here once (I think it was the first time any of us had met 'im) and was known as "the chap with the wallace & grommit tie" for some time after (Though there is some debate - some members of team SmoothWall swear it was a disney tie - can you clear this up for us John?)

That's a tough one. SchoolGuardian hasn't got VLAN support due to the way it was built. The next ISO of it is likely to have this. If you need VLAN support, ask your salesperson to swap it out for our commercial firewall product which does. I'd suggest using a second, unauthenticated filter port. This will mean you have to let "unauthenticated IPs" access all the sites that you want the unsecured lan to access, but this should not be a big issue. If you want to do transparent filtering though, it could give people on the secure LAN a way to access the sites those on the insecure LAN can access, but without logging a username, which may cause you issues?

You'll need "automatically detect settings" ticked - but thats usually default (or was last i looked).

NP. Nmap is a useful app - and will be in repos, so "apt-get install nmap" - cracking little network scanner. Some commandline fun required though. Remember "tcpdump" is the command line equivalent of wireshark - you can use it where avaialble on remote boxes (eg a SmoothWall, Web Server, Mail server.. whatevers giving you gyp) and copy the file back to your workstation to analyze in wireshark on linux or windows. If you're new to linux, remember traceroute is now called traceroute, not tracert, and lives in /usr/sbin which is sometimes not in path for unpriv'd users

NTLM ain't hard to support either, libcurl supports it perfectly well. You do (on non windows/ad platforms) need to prompt for creds, but how hard can it be?

First up, you will probably need to run wireshark as root - try that and see if it helps. You can only put a card into promiscuous mode as root. I take it other networking is working fine? What sort of other apps were you after?

I have my doubts - RM were over at ITSE, so if they were canning shows, they would hardly start with the biggest and brightest on home soil? Some larger companies are certainly downsizing on stands though.

In some cases you should be able to stab "transparent" on in smoothie, and you are good to go. This can alter how NTLM auth works though, as it changes the method subtly. Additionally transparent proxies need to be in the data path to work.

I think FTTC is less likely to be as variable in "up to" as ADSL was as there's going to be less variation in copper-distance between you and the vdsl dslam. We hope to be "on that" here in the autumn. What's ADSL getting you right now?
