  1. Thanks for this. The machines are actually running in MSCVMM and not VMWare. Would that still work as I can only see references saying it is for VMware and Hyper-V. Also does anyone have any idea of Pricing, as I could not easily find any prices advertised for it?
  2. I have a server with 7 Virtual Machines running on it. What is the best way to back this up? Is it possible to back up a server with running virtual machines on it (or do they need to be stopped?) Or should each virtual machine server be performing its own backup. At the moment just some shared files are being backed up to a external file server, which makes me wary if a virtual server was to fail or the server which hosts all the virtual servers was to fail.
  3. Thanks for replies. Will look into Windows Mail. I guess I would just need to enable: User Configuration, Adminstrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Mail, Turn off Windows Mail. For this to be disabled. The AV is McAfee which is interesting, but its what the LEA provides free. Its not running Subnets. With the activex, would doing that affect IE, Office or WMP?
  4. Please could someone recommend what would be the cheapest monitor to get for use with a Raspberry PI.
  5. I am starting to think about the 2014 new curriculum and have downloaded the PDF file here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/239033/PRIMARY_national_curriculum_-_Computing.pdf As far as I can tell its just related to Programming - Nothing about MS Office and Office Skills or learning Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Publisher etc... although the descriptions seem a bit cryptic rather than specific, although this may also be something to do with this paragraph: "The new national curriculum will set out only the essential knowledge that all children should acquire, and give schools and teachers more freedom to decide how to teach this most effectively and to design a wider school curriculum that best meets the needs of their pupils." So I guess Bee Bots, Scratch, Kodu, Python and Raspberry PI are the way forward. But am I right in thinking MS Office skills will no longer need to be taught, or is that another part of the new curriculum which I have missed? With the school now having new equipment iPads and Laptops, with BETT next month it would be good to go there to concentrate on what is needed to cover the new curriculum. I expect there are other subjects where ICT could be used with the new curriculum, and it would be good to identify those so nothing is missed. Reading https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/260481/PRIMARY_national_curriculum_11-9-13_2.pdf So far I have identified: Page 100: Mathematics "Information and communication technology (ICT) Calculators should not be used as a substitute for good written and mental arithmetic. They should therefore only be introduced near the end of key stage 2 to support pupils conceptual understanding and exploration of more complex number problems, if written and mental arithmetic are secure. In both primary and secondary schools, teachers should use their judgement about when ICT tools should be used." Page 125: Geometry – position and direction Notes and guidance (non-statutory) Pupils draw a pair of axes in one quadrant, with equal scales and integer labels. They read, write and use pairs of coordinates, for example (2, 5), including using coordinate-plotting ICT tools. Page 182: KS2 Design and Technology: Design generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design And that is all I can find. I would appreciate any thoughts and any further discussion regarding the new curriculum.
  6. I am looking for a way to improve the speed of a first time Windows 7 Logon for users. It currently takes about 50 seconds for the first time logon, and 15 seconds for subsequent logons with the user profile present. I found this post: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/292229 on VMWare forums which mentions deleting the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup registry key, but I am a bit wary of doing this as I can't find any other posts which suggest doing this to speed things up. I ahve not set up Roaming Profiles as I also have users with Offline Files setup and have a mixed Windows XP/Windows 7 network system, with the older machines still on XP. The server is 2008 R2. I have also seen people mention using Liquidware ProfileUnity, which I can't see any price for so I image it is not cheap. Also another one called Forensit User Profile Manager, which again does not look like a cheap solution. What I have also seen suggested is to copy everything into the default user profile - although no specifics on how to do this. I did read a MS article but it said it could only be done with a local account and not a network account. A new profile is currently just under 27MB in size. Does anyone have any solutions to reduce the time for the first time logon further?
  7. I am looking for a reasonably priced Laptop with a true 1080P screen - Something like a Core i3 or Core i5 around the £500 mark. Something like a Dell Latitude E5530 which has a 1080P screen option. Does anyone know what laptops have 1080P screens for around this price please?
  8. I have a Dell Vostro 3550 where the LAN card just seems to be completely dead - despite being enabled in the BIOS and having run a BIOS update it will not PXE boot or show in Win XP/Win 7 Device manager. Wireless LAN is working fine though. I just wondered if anyone had come across this before or any other ideas? Have compared the settings to an identical laptop but still does not see it at all.
  9. Compatibility: OS X 10.8 or later https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/apple-configurator/id434433123?mt=12 which is OSX Mountain Lion which says Apple (United Kingdom) - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion. Your Mac must be one of the following models: iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminium, or Early 2009 or newer) MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) Xserve (Early 2009) So Mac OS's don't go by machines specs (processor/ram/hdd) but rather on the date on purchase? Very bizarre!
  10. I have just set up 16 IPads using Meraki, but with 16 IPads and a 2MB connection it has ground the internet to a halt, so I have been advised to use Apple Configurator and a Mac Laptop. The problem is I dont own a Mac Laptop. What would be the cheapest secondhand Mac Laptop to do this please?
  11. Dont think it is permissions as WDS images for all other machine types work OK. Even tried copying the WIM across from the station and manually importing into WDS but it still will not show. I am guessing it is just an issue with these specific RM Laptops. Works find with Ghost, so used that but still not an ideal solution.
  12. Has anyone seen this or have a solution please? Surely I can't be the only person with this issue.
  13. Still looking for a script. Does anyone have a script please? A a way to stop these things installing? Thanks.
  14. I am looking to buy a switch to replace a 10/100 switch and have found this: TEG1024G 24-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch An awful lot cheaper than netgear and other unmanaged switches. Has anyone got or tried one? Are they any good?
  15. I have noticed on a lot of Win 7 laptops the message appears: "Download and install the driver for Synaptics Touchpad" when you log on in the microsoft action center. I have added these drivers into Deployment Workbench, but still getting this error. I found this post which explains the problem, but does not supply a solution, except manually installing it: Windows 7 Action Center - "Download and install the driver for Synaptics Touchpad" Does anyone have a solution to getting around this on the network, rather than a manual install please?
  16. Does anyone have a script please to remove delta search, conduit search, whitesmoke toolbar and other problem toolbars which hijack the start search page of IE? I remember finding a VB script ages back for Google toolbar and a few others to remove them, but cant find anything for the recent batch of these.
  17. Not sure if anyone knows the answer to this but I have a Vanilla 2008 R2 Network and have created a WDS image of the RM CL51 Laptop. The image is showing in Install Images in WDS. However neither this laptop nor any other machine is showing the image for the RM CL51 laptop when going to image from WDS (in the select the operating system you want to install screen). It shows images for other machine types but not the CL51 image. Its just missing. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this one please?
  18. To further add I did have a CC3 package to delete local profiles, although I never tried it on CC4 and guess it only worked with XP. Rebuilding can be a hassle if you have any 3rd party machines which CC4 wont store the hardware drivers for, or any locally attached printers and scanners that need reinstalling, or any machines which have single licence software installed, or any laptops which will need a wireless key to be re-entered and laptops which the staff have taken home to use over the holidays, although should be fine for generic large rooms of computers.
  19. Sorry for my not so helpful post. Should have added that it works out less expensive to decommission it and use vanilla than it does paying for the support and the extra time needed to manage a CC4 system. Also pretty sure I read somewhere that 2003 server support was being discontinued at some point (or perhaps its just SIMS?)
  20. This summer I am decommissioning CC4 networks and installing vanilla networks
  21. I have some Fujitsu Laptops which driver downloads for the Intel Graphics Card driver for Intel Core i3: Package: 164190 Graphics: 8.15.10.2696 Display Audio Driver: 6.14.0.3090 March 23, 2012 I have added this driver into the Deployment Workbench, however when the laptop builds after the initial install and picking up drivers it just displays a black blank screen (not usable). I also tried hooking an external monitor up but still a black blank screen. I then tried removing the intel graphics driver (by creating a new deployment share) and it does not have this problem, although the driver then needs to be loaded manually. Installing the driver manually also does not create this problem. Just wondered if anyone had come across this before of had any ideas please?
  22. No. Still looking.
  23. Sorry I meant on 32 bit OSs which the OSs still are (I guess this can be looked at in two ways and I have looked at it the other way) - I want to add the 64 bit stuff for futureproofing though. I will just leave it as is
  24. I think strPFx64 andstrPFx86 are pointing to the wrong directories - should not matter for this, but may do if others modify this to register other files. ProgramFiles(x86) is normally seen on x64 systems and ProgramFiles on x86 systems. Also not had a chance to test this yet (need to find another system which has this problem, as it now seems a bit random) - but also not sure if the spaces between the DIM variables will make any difference.
  25. The other two I need to register are: oShell.Run "RegSvr32 /s " & chr(34) & "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll" & chr(34) oShell.Run "RegSvr32 /s " & chr(34) & "%WinDir%\SysWOW64\actxprxy.dll" & chr(34) Re-registering these two (four - as two are for 32 bit and two are for 64 Bit) solves an issue where double clicking on a Windows Explorer folder will cause it to open in a new window - even if the explorer settings are set to tell it not do so. Although I also have a 2Simple OCX/DLL problem elsewhere and think I can work out from this how to adapt the VBS script to fix the issue there. I probably could use a Batch file - but guessing the VBS file will do the same thing - as long as I place it in a Computer Configuration startup script in the AD.
