We are currently rolling out SP3 on our CC3 network here. I must say RM's way of packaging SP3 instead of the option of slipstreaming into the build area mystifies me, the increase in build time is astronomical on some of the slower machines.

Filehippo is my site of choice seems to work well when following these annoying RM blueprints!

One option is to use your VLE for file sharing instead of the network, this is what I would think would be the best option for laptops like these.

PhotoREC is Free software which does the same job! It is command line though. We used onTrack at PC World for the dead hard drives they were good actually.

Its quite likely with speaker cable that if you go into a shop and ask they will try to sell you the most expensive stuff. Unless you have VERY good quality speakers (and im not talking home HIFI speakers here but studio quality monitors over £150 a speaker and full range) then you will not notice a blind bit of difference even if you wired it up with wire from the kettle cable that plugs into the wall

This would be my guess as well, its not a W7 specific thing, it used to happen a lot when iTunes was installed on PCs with Vista and XP as well. Not really sure why it happens but removing the upper and lower filters usually sorted it.

I am just completing CCNA Exploration Pt2/4 at the moment! On CH7 of the Routing concepts section. Who did you follow the course with? I have been using Packet Tracer for the examples, actually a really useful piece of software. Got 96% so far as an average of the end of chapter exams and first part exam, but am finding the RIPv2 chapter confusing becuase of the way its written! but maybe thats just me! O well!

Are these licences similar to Fronter which is apparently Open Software? The only thing Open about that is the large flaws within its codebase

I think from what I have heard, people are 'scared' of being on their own in terms of support. My school didn't want to use Joomla or Moodle because I was the only person who knew about them in depth and could set one up and manage it. A lot of schools totally rely on outside support for their infrastructure. I have found it a little odd at times not spending the money on training instead.

I sometimes have had problems in the past where APIC drivers in linux cause issues like that. Try booting (if possible, I know ubuntu/knoppix can do it) with the boot commands -noapic -nolapic

It will be very interesting how this pans out for filtering, as we will be totally stuck if they implement this as all we can do is block addresses such as google.com not specific variants eg google.com:443 If the results are delivered in plain text, it would be pointless as a lot of the time the search query is obvious from the web address. I expect that if the whole site is HTTPS then parts such as the 'cached' section could prove interesting as could the ability to remove the safesearch filters!

The RM Smartcache cant see any search strings in a HTTPS site. They even did an update recently becuase it didn't show any HTTPS sites at all. You cannot create a deny rule for https://google.com on the smartcache as it would come out as http://https://google.com I would think. I can only think of changing the host file maybe?

Grub these days will find the Windows partition by default and add it to the list of avail OS's you will only have to perform the fixboot etc when you remove linux. I would still recommend Ubuntu though, for your RPM's you just replace them with compatible .DEBs which do the same job

True Here is a pretty exhaustive list of Linux distros which write to NTFS using the NTFS-3G driver. NTFS-3G in Distributions

You can access an NTFS partition using ntfs-3g which is installed with Ubuntu but I am not sure with Fedora. You would usually use something like sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/hda1 /mount/c -force

If you do shrink your windows partition with ubuntu partitioner, just be aware that you will more than likely have to run scan disk on it a number of times after to get it back working again!

Use WUBI if you are worried about partitions and losing your data, it will use a hard drive file as a virtual disk, I don't notice that much of a difference in performance tbh. http://wubi-installer.org/

Event ID 4101 Mmm it suggests that the hardware is taking a long time to respond to normal operations, all I can think is hardware problems really :s Try keeping the laptop as cold as possible and blow out dust to rule out chipset overheating.

Mmmm could be hardware related, what is the error code given when it stops responding?

Is that on a clean restore with no other additions inc service packs?

I believe it just burns an ISO which is in a hidden folder somewhere in the C drive.
