We get exactly the same issue!! I thought it was just us!

We have impero across the site (I know its not free though) which the staff use for classroom management. As an admin tool it is rather useful as well, we no longer have the issue of 'what PC are you logged on to' as we can search for the particular username in the list to view

Photorec and TeskDisk are the main ones i use. Testdisk will usually be able to recover a corrupt partition if one is still available.

Hi all! Anyone had the task of licencing Reason in schools? It seems that even if you embed Reason in an image you still end up with issues with the end copy requiring the CD to be inserted and buttons clicked to licence it. I have started looking at AutoIT to try to automate the process but i am extremely rubbish at autoIT and am struggling somewhat with what is possible with the software! If anyone has any ideas either automation wise or an alternative way of licencing Reason i would love to hear it! Many thanks James

Play it the Mac way, integrating them too tight with Windows caused REALLY odd problems, IE using a non OSx formatted network drive home share meant that iPhoto didn't work without redirecting to a different folder which was formatted by OSx. Also if the user ran out of drive space things started to go crazy apps wouldn't open etc and it didn't mention anything about running out of space!

The disabling right click is application specific, even if you have disabled right click in Windows I think it is still enabled in most apps?? (I think)

But it still came with a sticker.... The whole point behind this is, if its a legit copy of Windows, somewhere in the boxes of stuff is a Windows OEM CD with a licence key. Without the licence key there is no way that the copy is legitimate. I don't stick mine on either, it makes a mess when you get a new case or change Windows versions but it is still in my box I don't like mess.

Lol seriously if it was legit, it would have a sticker. MS do not beat around the bush with their OS and stickers, they love them more than charging for the OS itself...

I know that OFfice 2003 will do the same if you delete the file, whereas if you remove the ability for it to access the DLLs to check for their existence then it doesn't bother trying to reinstall. Unfortunately there is no way on 2003 I looked for ages to find a way. Anyway the SRP means that even if they found a way of pressing F7 whilst standing on their head and spinning round (we know MS like to have strange ways of getting to dialog boxes which are out of the control of admins, my favourite being adding printers using the Add Scanner and Camera Wizard!!) they couldn't actually use it as the dictionary doesn't exist for them to try to run it

I currently only have Office 2003, but we disable the dictionary files in the Office Common files using Software restriction policies Doesn't stop them from pressing F7 which you cannot disable in office, BUT it does mean that when you do click it, it complains that it cannot find the files!!

Is this on a CISCO device? I haven't done much in the way of ACLs for HP ones. On a CISCO device the DHCP DNS etc options are there for ease of reading of port numbers. If you wanted to disable DHCP completely on a subnet you would have to use the 0.0.0.0/0 DHCP option but it would be pretty useless for the most part. What I would expect from your rule there is that once your clients have IP addresses that they would no longer be able to contact the DHCP server. Try this by pinging once the clients are up and running. That would prove that your rule is working as such. Its an odd set up though, normally you would want to allow only access to your DHCP servers from a guest network and none of the others (if it was a super secure environment ) This would be so that when clients renegotiate their lease (half way through their lease time) they can do so. Otherwise when the lease time is up you will get clients being disconnected for a short period while they renegotiate a lease from scratch from your server. Hope that makes some sense!!

DHCP is application layer, above IP. It uses 255.255.255.255 as a broadcast packet and as the client doesn't yet have an IP it cannot be blocked by a rule. Why would you want to stop people from getting IPs? It would be a lonely guest network!!

A software restriction policy applied to the students group is the correct way to go here. You can restrict for all kinds of file types etc, rather handy! Be wary of restricting too much though!! They still need to run apps from program files / windows dir / any public drives etc.

DNS lookup removes the first part of the domain name (presumably the client identifier) and replaces it with wpad. Then, it "moves up" in the hierarchy by removing more parts of the domain name, until it finds a WPAD PAC file or leaves the current organisation.

Isn't DHCP the preferred choice these days? I believe most things support this. The DNS method was not preferred as someone could easily bring their own machine named WPAD into a domain and cause some interesting problems with your network!!!

Take ownership of the folders by logging onto one of your DCs as a domain admin, or administrator and right click->properties->Security->Advanced->Ownership and ensure you set yourself as owner and propogate the permissions down. Seems a strange place to put custom folders tbh...
