  1. work at home is a bit of a saw issue. yes you can install it for them but you cannot give them your disks (we've read from MS) to take with them for them to install it. nither may you give them the codes. under WAH rights they may only legally use the software for school purposes. microsoft have documents on schools agreements stating what you can and cant do.
  2. never thought of it from this angle. i would like to know where you think they should be used.
  3. look up gencontrol, based upon vnc.
  4. https://82.198.225.195/exchweb/bin/auth/owalogon.asp?url=https://82.198.225.195/exchange/&reason=0 thats the one - firefox is the best browser to use.
  5. the DPA says that you may only collect infomation that you need... so you need to justify having a print... why would you need my print when you have my name???
  6. my parents did not recieve a letter - nor did i. i know it isn't the same database and i also asked the question of how the print was processed to which no one could give me a definitive answer. why should i let my prints be used in a system where the techs and admin havent the foggiest??? some sytems actually save an image of your print - this one did. so i opted out - as is my right. i also didn't have a school photo. again i opted out. i also asked for all letters concerning me to be sent to me and not my parents and for them to correct my name from matt to matthew on all formal documentation, nither oh which they did (in breach of the DPA).
  7. 1 windows 2000 DC with DNS, 1 windows 2008 dc with all the rolls i could add except DHCP, 1 ubuntu squid server (thats geeky), thats my server side neway.
  8. and if they insist and is doesn't imediatly solve the issue - get them to remove and it and dont pay them. we have exchange 2003 with some mods to the OWA (looks like outlook2010 hehehe), using backupexec 1d to a disk and then to tape, we do a full backup every night. works fine. thats on 2gb of ram as stated before.

    My Linux Experiment

i tried making the switch but found myself being too windowdised. tho i use ubuntu everyday as well as windows and are migrating slowly over as i find the bit of ubuntu that are better than windows. even tried it on the domain at work but it doesn't seem to like any of my dual head video controllers.
  10. agreed - we have 2GB RAM and back up is fine - also around 1000 mailboxes.
  11. if you can try and get the 6 cell samsung nc10's there excelent, although they cost a little more. (around300 a peice).
  12. the trantect 4.4 are currently lisence free in the uk and will be until 2012. at around £100 there not bad.
  13. The JMFG have a list of what is and isn't acceptable, they state it by frequency and give you a maximum output power for that frequency range. i'll add a link. i no it exists as i have a hard copy in a folder that i gig with as i'm often given radio gear where the venue does not have the correct lisencing.
  14. some wireless is free from lisencing, typically stuff like the 4 channel trantec 4.4 system is lisence free in the uk but the 4.16 requires a lisence. check out JFMG Radio spectrum for programme making and entertainment for info about UK lisencing.
  15. i've found out how to force it to appear and it works perfectly for us... no issues with it at all and all working, serial no, shared galler and team content ect.
  16. about 70GB here. 150 staff 750 students.
  17. we redid ours so that now everything appears as one drive for users, staff, student shared, software and an archive, are saved in there with folder for each department so that they cannot create folder in the root or the folders within the root, uses DFS alot and is heavily restricted down using ntfs permisions. to get round the growing size - pick a sensible size and stick to it - when it runs out rather than expand get users to delete their old redundant work or you archive it on thir behalf. we archived the existing shared areas and set it to read and delete only, meaning they can delet or move files but not add to the mess.. i plan to archive the remains of the archive to disk(s)- (dvd's) and store them i multiple locations at chrismass to free up the space for new things. also use quota management to restrict staff individually using the shared area - alot think thats it's an extension to their my documents (hence the mess). a sensible limit that is appropiate and then you can easily track which users are abusing the area. it's taken me 5 hours in total i reckon but worth it for the year. i plan on doing the same again next year.
  18. sounds about right
  19. we have it for the canteen, i dont agree with it, violation of a humans rights, unless they can opt out and u tell them. if you fail to tell them then you, in my opinoun shouldn't be in a school. there not all too reliable. while i was a student my 6th form had them, i of course put my foot down and refused to have my prints taken. done nothing wrong, but whats wrong with my name??? surely thats good enough for registration??? if thats the case then there's no need for finger prints and you need to run it thought your data protection policy.
  20. yeah go for 2 dc's - adds rudundancy, we have 1000 students and 150 staff say, and 3 dc's and 3 member servers. setup a workstation somewhere else, in a cupboard if needs be, with your tb drive the main reason for offsite storage is if someone nicks your servers or they physically get damaged by say flood or fire. back up to the workstation. if you have less than 40GB total user files go for a full each night - it's easy and space is cheap atm. also do a full systemstate every night if u can, not a shadow copy. for power - apc all the way we have 3 2200 towers, 2 2200 racked up and a 1500 on our core switch and internet gateway. if ur buget allows get the one that messages the network when power goes down.
  21. the NC10 is a ledge on a netbook - is it a netbook, cos if feels more like a laptop to me, it's certainly a good buy no matter what. i have the 6 cell version and have been getting 12 hours or more out of it, about 10 playing music through headphones. the xp version they send is quite nice too. i havent tryed the nc10 with ubuntu but my asus 901eees' battery life dimished once i put ubuntu on it - dont know why but aparently it's known that batter life is longer with xp than ubuntu.
  22. in cc4 - add a transform file (.MST)... i dont know how to do this, there's no add button. upload/import your msi into RMMC. find the package, right click > properties then the contents the mst SHOULD be there if not..... i dunno what RM have done. have they told u how u can force an MST to be there?
  23. i get the same thing and the same feeling... cc4 is still not a sellable product in my view, it simply does not do everything that cc3 can do. i feel like we've gone backwards. still hoping for vanilla....
  24. in cc4 it's possible to inport the msi to RMMC, then attach an MST file to the package once it's in. there is no .ini files anymore as all the meta data should be held in the postgres database on your FRDC. do u have an mst file? if so can you tell us how u got it? i keep only being able to get to an xml file.
  25. why not sit down with them and talk about what has to be done, and ask who wants to do it, if no one does put it in the pot and share them out at the end. you may find that someone may want to take on some responsibilities.
