Hi,

Not sure this will be useful to anyone but thought i'd post it just in case.

We just got rid of our old POS system that used the ST-A10s and I thought I might try and re-purpose one as a 6th form signing in machine utilising the mag card reader.

I wanted Windows 7 on it as XP is a liability. I knew from previous googleing that there is no win7 driver for the touchscreen but as I wanted to use the mag reader my google skills went to work.

To cut a long (mostly boring) story short, I found drivers for everything, including... the touchscreen!

I now have a fully functioning ST-A10 running windows 7 with touchscreen and mag reader. (I might program the till display next - just because I can!)

If anyone has these machines knocking about and want to update and reuse you can find the drivers below.

PS getting the mag reader to work was a pain so if anyone needs help I can post some instructions to point you in the right direction.

  • Thanks 3

I thought you were describing your ST-A10 as a pile of ...

Well it's not going to break any speed records but with an SSD and an extra gig of RAM it's not doing too badly. :eyebrows:

No problem, glad this has helped someone. I was just thinking that I might see if we can get windows 10 on them to keep them crawling on for a bit longer.

If you manage to do that, please let me know. I upgraded my machine to a SSD and added an extra gig of RAM and installed Win 7 and its really fast and works well as a "customer order machine" that sits out front at our pizzeria, McDonald's style. Thank you again and let us know if you decide to work on the system any more!

I would like a step by step to get win 7 32 bit / posready 7 to work on this machine. I had win 10 ltsc going, but it took over a minute to pass login and another minute plus for harddrive to stop reading. Everything is slow on it. I should get 2gig stick and replace default.

Windows 10 barely works on a HDD IME. It’s just so read heavy all the time. To be fair, 7 wasn’t much better and we started going to SSD when we went to 7.

If this has an IDE drive, you could use a CF card instead - potentially much faster.

Windows 8 pro works as fast as win xp pro. I have Win 7 pro 64 and not 32 bit version. I was scratching y head why it does not install from cd... Yeah 32 bit is missing. I tried or will try posready 7 again, as posready 9 from Microsoft will not load from disk. It is missing startup files or something. Still looking for 1g ram for ST- A10-2b7k-qm-r, but do not see samsung version anymore.

Compact Flash card? would that not burn out? Hate to remove HDD to test new OS, was hoping to get more youtube help to install from usb drive or optical drive, but also need to get usb optical.

No, a good quality CF card will work fine as an OS disk, even if not forever. You wouldn’t want it in a heavy write situation, but a POS machine with a LTS OS doesn’t write that much to disk.

Out of curiosity, what tills are you using now and are you running Biostore on the tills? Also out of curiosity, what signing system are you using?
