PC losing duplicate and extend settings

Hi All,

 

Bit of a weird one, since starting back this week we have had about 7 or 8 PC's around the school that keep resetting there extended or duplicate display settings and go back to PC only. This has happened on PC's with projectors, Ctouch TV's and second monitors. We change them back to duplicate or extend and they work fine but we have had a couple that then reset to PC only on restart. Never had this issue before on the PC's. Has anyone seen anything like this at the present or got any suggestions what might be happening.

Has the power off/sleep sequence changed between board and PC or any othe "video" or sound configuration changed? Has anyone used the board natively since last being driven by the PC or had a different device wirelessly connected to it after school or whatever?

I've had one of them do something similar. Was really fighting me tbh!

 

Had to change something in the Intel graphics driver options (think it was from right-click on desktop, something, "output to" and change it to "external display and non-internal display.") <- Sorry that's REALLY vague and pretty much useless lol! I recall it being the option that didn't include any internal display, but had words more or less like use two external displays.

 

After THAT I could do into the usual from right-click desktop and knock around the Windows graphics settings themselves for it. Only was the one PC mind.

Did anyone work this out? Seems we are being hit with this now across multiple different sites and models al must be driver related or windows patch etc

Check PowerPoint. We’ve seen multiple times a problem where if the secondary screen is switched on after the ppt slide show has been started the pc reverts to PC screen only after the slide show finishes.

This. From memory I think it’s something to do with Presenter mode.

Yeah that’s a common one with PowerPoint, but we started having reports of machines just changing the settings mid lesson from multiple sites so wondered if anyone found a specific driver/patch that might be causing it

 

I fully appreciate it might just be new term user errors but thought I’d ask after seeing this thread if anyone else had noticed it, as we never had any of these issues prior to summer being reported

We're getting our a**ses kicked with this at the moment. We've had 34 new interactive screens installed over Summer and people are pointing to these being the issue, but now noticing it on screens which we've had up for sometime has started doing it.

We've got similar problems with projectors and panels (although mainly panels) defaulting back to PC screen only from Duplicate when a user logs in/switches user or exits a PowerPoint slide show. I spoke to Ctouch and apparently the PowerPoint slideshow issue is an Windows issue affecting several manufacturers? We also found an Windows Update in July that was interfering with the AMD drivers, just to help matters. In the meantime we are putting HDMI splitters in so the pc monitor and panel are sharing the same output - so far, so good but not ideal for anyone who wants to use extended desktop.

+1 Experiencing the same issue. We initially thought it was staff changing settings but, as others have suggested, I'm convinced it's a recent Windows/Driver update that's caused this as the problem is too widespread.

When you allowed your computers to do the latest updates (to see if there's a correlation) and if you actually allow driver updates?

 

Also is it limited to HDMI, VGA, Display Port ?

 

Using splitters? Dual output?

 

Desktops only affected or laptops (with inbuilt screen) too?

 

AMD or Intel GFX chipset?

I've had a few of these lately, although I've put it down to user error, as it hasn't exactly been a flood, and there's always one or two.

 

Just today though, I got bored of being asked the question, so I put a shortcut on teachers' desktop that switches the display to Duplicate mode:

 

C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /clone

 

We're Win 22H2, Windows Updates automatic, but driver updates blocked.

When you allowed your computers to do the latest updates (to see if there's a correlation) and if you actually allow driver updates? - We have all drivers being updated via Windows Update, however checking today a few of the machines have old Intel drivers so feel it's more likely a Windows patch

Been having a dig into this further, and seems quite a few different forums have random reports of KB5028166 and KB5029244 causing issues with HDMI and monitors power savings etc (Jul/Aug rollup for Win10 22H2)

 

As we have our updates on a 14-day delay cycle I thought I'd test on a machine to see if there's a new September release and there is KB5030211 which was released 14~ days ago, so will be interesting to see if this does anything to it!

So do we but it doesn't stop PowerPoint disabling the secondary screen if it is switched off when the Slideshow is started.

One of our team found something worth trying with this and we're now a week since the last call regarding a classroom screen "randomly" losing signal so it might be worth a try if you're seeing the same problem before you start looking too much at updates or drivers or cable lengths.

 

It's a user registry setting

 

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\powerpoint\options

RestoreTopology REG_Dword 0

 

This is alongside GPO settings that we already had in place

 

Microsoft PowerPoint 2016/PowerPoint Options/Advanced

 

Allow PowerPoint to also automatically extend the display when presenting on a desktop - Disabled Do not allow PowerPoint to automatically extend the display when presenting on a laptop or tablet - Enabled

 

I'm clearly tempting fate posting this but we'll see.

Did you find this resolved the issue? It's been on and off here for over a year, different PCs, different screens etc. Definitely PowerPoint related but the 'do not allow PowerPoint to automatically extend' setting does not fix it, that's been enabled for a while.

 

3 different staff members have specifically reported this to happen after PowerPoint is run, the 2nd display is 'freezed', and then they press escape to get out of PP. Not sure if the 'freeze' button on a display can have any impact, but they all reported this.

 

As I say, this has taken over a year to get 3 people saying the same, 2 of which say it is replicable on their account.

We've gone from multiple reports of screens switching off each day to roughly 0 since implementing these registry keys. So yes I'd say it's resolved the problem here.
