Edge or Internet Explorer 11

I'm setting up a new server and locking down computers with group policies so that Internet Explorer is ready for use by visitors and staff. However how much longer is IE going to be around? People are still very unfamiliar with Edge so I don't want to force it on them. But at the same time I don't want to be fiddling around with Chrome/Edge/IE. I'd rather set one browser for them. So Edge or IE?

It's a hard one, Internet Explorer will be around for a few years yet as Windows 7 is still supported until 2020 I believe. Still, new functionality will be aimed more at Edge as Windows 10 is adopted more and more.

 

Still saying that I have seen more people develop sites for Chrome and due to compatibility issues with some of the services the Primary use, I have set Chrome as default.

We allow both. History etc can be pulled out of both browsers, GPs exist to manage both (at least, from 1703 onwards) and we're now able to direct users to Edge where a site maybe didn't work in IE. It's going well, and users get the choice. Has helped me to avoid having to deploy Chrome or anything else too.

Don't get me wrong I love Chrome for personal use but as a volunteer with very little time to get down to the charity I want to just be able to have as few browsers to have to deal with as possible. Hence my thinking behind managing both Edge and IE with group policy.

Just set up Edge, IE is dead, only there for websites that are also dead.

 

Edge needs some users after all, it cries so hard when you load Chrome, it's sad.

Chrome is pretty much the gold standard for web developers to test against right now. I've seen too many things break in Edge and IE11 gets goofy with needing compatibility mode on a lot of things. Disable both, Install Chrome and manage it with the GPO templates. If it's a kiosk you could probably even leave the auto-updater turned on. Of all the headache inducing software I have to support, Chrome isn't one of them.

I cant say I've imported GPO templates before. Is it easy enough to do? Would be great if I could use group policy. For example as these are used by the public I would need to do things like turn off Sign In to Chrome.

Been using Edge since 1709. It's slightly slower than Chrome. I was hoping the Application Guard feature in 1709 would work on the education sku. It doesn't only the enterprise version. I think it still makes sense for IE to be the default unless you want to maintain the enterprise list.

We allow - and provide all three browsers. And apply group policies for all 3. A number of times being able to switch browser has got a user out of trouble. I think Edge is quite snappy - and kind of dislike chrome's intrusive attempts to get you to logon....or how youtube seems fussy with it....but most sites seem fine with IE. I always this there is a good learning point for students to understand that the "Browser" is just a program (like word..or Pages...) which does a job...and is not the "internet" itself.

From what I can tell the GPO that stops users signing into Chrome has now been removed. This could be an issue. We don't want members of the public adding their personal accounts to the Chrome Browser.

We have IE11 on our boxes and we fire it off at login. Our MIS system only works correctly in IE8+ It doesn't work at all in Edge. Basically this means we break 50% of the Internet and our own Moodle. Luckily we also include Chrome on the boxes and the staff as slowly learning that Moodle doesn't display properly in IE or Edge. The middle third of the main page displays blank, so a huge swag of courses are inaccessible. Since it does display correctly in every browser I've tested - Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, Konqueror, Safari, Gnome Web, Seamonkey and Lynx, I am not to do bother to determine why it doesn't display in the rubbish standard M$ browsers.

I've just set up Chrome so it resets back to default and loads the GPO settings every time it is closed, that way people can log in to it and as soon as the browser is closed it's reset.
