Free Network Discovery: Station Name, Dell Service Tag, Installed Software, Printers

I have to produce a complete list of my network stations with their names, service tags, installed software any network printers etc.

 

As this is a one-off [for a new network deployment we are planning for the Summer] I do not want to buy a piece of software that I won't use again.

 

I have tried some free software but they all have had their limitations: Alloy Discovery 5 does what I want but only for 10 stations [10 nodes] AutoScan Network crashes before completing a scan and McAfee Network Scan is still scanning the network since early this morning.

 

Can anyone recommend a free bit of software that will complete this task for me in a reasonable time? [and export the results to CSV, Excel, TXT]

Spiceworks is ideal for doing this. It will even pull in your Dell warranties and make a pretty network map for you.

Already running Spiceworks on one of my servers and getting it to look at the network. My new network supplier is not happy with the information provided by Spiceworks [should have mentioned this in the original post]

 

I will go back to the server and look again to see if I can identify what is wrong with said data.

I have had another look at Spiceworks and it seems to do what you would expect. However I would like to modify the report it produces to have only one line per workstation. The report I get now has:

 

Station name 1, O/S, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Device Type, Model, Microsoft .Net

Station name 1, O/S, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Device Type, Java

Station name 1, O/S, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Device Type, Microsoft Office

Station name 2, O/S, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Device Type, Model, Microsoft .Net

Station name 2, O/S, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Device Type, Java

Station name 2, O/S, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Device Type, Microsoft Office

...

 

It does this even if I don't request installed software.

 

What I would like the report to do is

 

Station name 1, O/S, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Device Type, Model, Microsoft .Net, Java, Microsoft Office

Station name 2, O/S, Serial Number, Manufacturer, Device Type, Model, Microsoft .Net, Java, Microsoft Office

...

 

Would it be possible to condense the report to do this?

Or the freeware version of lansweeper might do the trick Network Inventory and Software Inventory Management for Windows Networks. You do need to run an exe on the clients though (can be done in logon script or GPO IIRC)...

Just use a script that reports back, one that writes the data to a db on your server or a csv.
