Exchange 2007 - Pitfalls!!

Well Microsoft seem to be on a mission to change everything that was useful

 

First it was Office 2007 - by denying us the ability to deploy via Group Policy

 

Now its the turn of Exchange 2007.. No longer can you use AD to create Mailboxes... unless you have Exchange 2003 installed as well - but the mailboxes are flagged as "Legacy Mailboxes" in 2007... To import everyone with 2007 mailboxes you need a CSV file and knowledge of PowerShell 8O :x

 

And if you need to delete a mailbox in 2007 - Don't for godsakes right click the user and click on "Remove" - cos this deletes the user from AD as well!! Luckily I did this to a handful of Year 11's who have left the school so no major problems - but it could have been much worse..

What i should have done was click "Disable" which.. deletes the mailbox..

woah thanks for the info, im planning on moving our exchange from 2003 to 2007 with a brand new server. I dont see what MS had to make things complecated... mind you, i suppose thats what they are good at

It probably will all become clear and simple with the new windows server coming out next year... And all these irritating problems will encourage youo to upgrade.

Thats an oddity, we are using 2007 here for curriculum. Have clicked remove on several users and never had it delete the user from the AD as well yet. Having read this , I just "removed" another one just to be sure that I had been using remove, and sure enough it removed the mailbox, but didnt remove the user from AD /shrug

Are there any differences in installations, ie is your an upgrade Gatt and yours a new install Jake Mine is a new install and have no issues with deleting mailboxes but have a colleague who upgraded from 2003 and has had no end of problems.

on my Exchange at home I just told it to make exchange boxes for all domain accounts in a specified folder in the Active D, and walked through an nice wizard, all without powershell! But that was the MS Virtual setup thingy whatsit, my copy of Exchange 2007 for home hasnt arrived yet or may have and be in the box still but its on my to do list...
