caffrey Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Should've done this as a poll really. Been asked if I want to go to NY in May, not free as I'll be paying, not sure what to expect. If this sounds unusual asking a question like this, is I've never been on a plane before and I don't particularly like holidays!

I went recently for 5 days and found that 4 of them I simply wandered around, taking it in, and with very little daily expenditure had a great time. If you want to do things like going up the Empire State they can be expensive ($25/adult) but there are ways of making that cheaper such as "NYC Pass" but with those you have to plan your days, get up early and make sure you visit enough places to make it worth while. There are many places I would recommend you visit, but the two I will pick out are: Roasting Plant The High Line Take some comfortable shoes Dave
Iain.Faulkner Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I went for my Honeymoon in April last year.....to me it's the most amazing place on the planet...I loved every second of it and I'd go back again tomorrow if I could. We did the NYC pass, and it suited us well, like as has been said by DavidIrwin, it does mean you have to be a little bit more organised but it was well worth it for us :-) 2

I think it's fleet week the week I'm supposed to be going and memorial day weekend so could be fun. can't remember the last time I went on holiday, probably 18 years ago!

witch Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 (edited) I went last Easter and it was brilliant. If you do go up the Empire State, book it here on line and go for the ticket that lets you skip the lines - it might be a bit pricey but it was very worth it - we were swept past the very long lines as if we were royalty - it was the best experience! We didnt do the NYC pass as we knew we probably wouldnt want to do the museums due to time constraints. But we booked the statue of liberty tour from here and again, saved us a lot of time. The lines and security checks are very long. We just walked about most of the time - actually didnt spend much. Everyone was very friendly. We walked from the financial district at one end right through the city. We also looked on line for places used in films and books - that was fun. It is worth looking for New York connections to things you love. We did the circle line cruise as well. The South Street Seaport was lovely too. We didn't find Central Park particularly great compared with English parks, and the Lennon memorial was just a bit mawkish I agree the High Line walk is great, specially when combined with breakfast at a cafe in the old meat packing district Edited January 16, 2013 by witch

jmak Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 As above, go for it! And you're right, attempting to do all of the touristy things will just make you tired and you won't really experience NYC. I'd say pick out a couple - definitely worth going up one of the sky-scrapers - can't really recommend one, as I went up the twin towers, which gives away how long it is since I went. Maybe one of the museums - there's got to be one that grabs you - and an evening event, just for the experience. Something at Maddison Square Gardens, Carnegie Hall or Broadway depending on your tastes. That'll leave you plenty of time for hanging out in diners, bars and the park.

Re: burger suggestion, I really want to go to a 5 guys too, heard good things about them.
featured_spectre Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I'd say $150-$180 per day is about right, depending on the level of hotel you want. As for spending money, $100-$150 a day should see you right...so for 5 days $1250-$1650 should see you right for the whole time.
