Hi,

We have a member of the time-tabling team who wish to construct timetables and have access to sims.net via their Mac Book...

Is Parallels Desktop their only option...

Thanks

Depends if you want or if they want to run OS X and a virtual machine at the same time or if you want them to only run windows. If the first then a virtualisation enviroment such as

Parallels, VMWare Fusion or Virtual Box ( As above some form of virtualisation )

OR

If you want them to only run windows ( so like the latter above ) then

boot camp ( bare metal ) so equivelant of installing windows onto a normal windows pc however you use the boot camp utility to do this , something along the lines of : http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/boot_camp_install-setup.pdf

Another option would be to Remote desktop to their normal Windows computer if they have one or to a terminal server.

We provide access to SIMS via Citrix to our prep and also the pre-prep school, all running Apple kit.. Also to Art and Music here, who are all Apple. Probably not the cheapest option, but certainly reliable.

yes...it's hard to use any computer without a monitor...

I wasn't sure what his abbreviation meant either lol, I did think Visual Display Unit but then figured it must be visualization related and not to do with a screen or monitor

Glad im not the only one :)

I prefer VMWare Fusion, but i think virtualbox is free isn't it. If not there is a free one.

It will really depend on where and how they connect, because installing a virtual client is okay to run from the network, but elsewhere, say over VPN it can be really slow.

Then you'd be better off just using remote access direct / terminal server, even logmein is pretty good. Especially if you're only doing it for one 'power' user.

As for the VDU - maybe Aspen runs by touch.

We do this currently with Remote Desktop for a couple of Macs, over a quick network it's not far off the experience of using a local machine. Very flexible too.

We run Parallels (were on 7, seems to be fine since upgrade to 8).

Me and Senior Leadership team member responsible for Timetable are both using MacBook Airs with an additional monitor and it works well.

Discover is running on the same setup.

Remote App Server and RDP also in use for iPads and home use - you can tell I'm hedging my bets.

Only a few of our schools have Macs and they all seem to use Parallels to run Windows, and therefore the SIMS .net client.

If you take this option, be sure to set up Parallels to use "bridged networking" rather than NAT. We installed SOLUS3 in one of the schools and they wanted Discover, but because they were set up to use NAT networking, the Windows 7 parallels environments could not be contacted on the network (the Win 7 environment could access the network with no issues though). It meant that the SOLUS3 Deployment Service could not deploy the SOLUS3 Agent to the Win 7 environment and install Discover.

So, guys, I'm assuming SIMS isn't compatible with Apple computers? I suspect the Learning gateway is though, since it's only a website, so teaching staff can still write their reports etc on mac computers, whereas admin staff would require PCs??

Cheers

Yep reports through web on SLG

Only need for PC is to run desktop client but you can run windows on MAC via parallels or I prefer VMware fusion. Also virtual box which is free
