We transitioned from CLI based Layer 3 HP switches to fully UniFi over 3 years and it has been a very positive experience. There were a few issues at the very beginning of our UniFi move as we moved WAPS over first and there were a couple of years when UniFI seemed to be finding it's feet and had software/hardware blips (eg PTZ cameras that couldn't follow people or do patrols) but they seem to have their stuff together now and I find it hard to fault them on pricing, company direction or user interface. We've got an EFG controller, 3 Pro Aggregators, 37 Pro 48 POE switches and 3 Flexes and have had one duff port in 4 years which was RMAed with no query. I particularly like the single pane of glass interface with integration between devices such as clickable shortcuts to open doors showing on live CCTV feeds.

We're running UniFi - Network, Protect, Access and Drive. I'm currently evaluating the EFG against our Smoothwall and although it's not entirely there yet I think it will be soon. Issues that spring to mind at the moment are - logging by IP/MAC not user. We have to go to Impero for the last leg of enquiry when the EFG spots a bad actor on-site. This is potentially a problem as the DfE says Firewalls must log user activity. I have seen some reports that people are expecting user based logging in UniFi soon. You need the UniFi Endpoint app but it's free too and the OPs concern was that UniFi Identity Enterprise was costly.

We have now started to receive e-mails from ParentPay ostensibly warning us about the perils of cybercrime but unsubtly making a dig at 'Company A' and 'Company B' for the fact that they only have the standard Cyber Essentials certification not the Cyber Essentials Plus. What they don't mention is that although Parent Pay have the plus cert, ESS only have the same standard cert that their competitors have. They also make a big thing about the importance of patching which seems pretty rich coming from the people who have kept their client schools on ancient server versions till this year. Not sure if they mentioned their attitude to storing SA passwords in plain text to IASME when they self certified either.

Another up-vote for Sign in app. - It's happily running on some old iPads so cost us very little to put in. - It doesn't seem to suffer from the very regular 'loss of printer connection' messages that our previous app did. - The ability to choose the default direction of travel means that for students it signs them in (lates) but for staff it signs them out (medical appointments etc) - Integration with AD and SIMS is simple Just as a side note, although Sign in app don't have any mounts with readers on their site that are totally standalone, you can purchase the desktop one and put a USB power bank inside giving you the best of both worlds. Most of the time it is plugged in to the mains via the power bank but if we need to take it to a different location we can unplug it and the reader is powered by the powerbank.

We use Intune for Windows and Apple devices. I've been pleased with how easy it was to setup although I'm still a little uncertain as to the licensing. We have added 3 techs as Endpoint Admins which allows them to enroll devices as 'corporate' owned. This seems to give full access to Endpoint/InTune features but almost feels too cheap compared to the £5-7 pounds per device we have paid for other MDMs. On a side note, when ordering iPads through the government COVID scheme it asks for a 7-digit Apple partner code to add devices to your MDM but if you have used Apple School Manager from the start your code will be 6 digits - just use the 6-digit code, it works perfectly well on the units I have received.

We are a mixed Windows 10/Mac OS environment with 12 ICT Suites, 90 MacBook Airs in class trolleys, 100+ iPads as class resources and 90ish staff with MacBook Airs. There are 2 posts - one part time (with flexibility on working hours) and one full time. The pay's not great but it's not terrible and the post comes with a MacBook Air, iPad and plenty of scope for career development. As a college Moat has a good atmosphere and is keen to ensure that staff and students have access to up to date technology. One of the posts will involve design and editing of our media content (Social Media, Website, videos etc) while the other will focus more on user support and infrastructure maintenance and development. We run Parallels (were on 7, seems to be fine since upgrade to 8). Me and Senior Leadership team member responsible for Timetable are both using MacBook Airs with an additional monitor and it works well. Discover is running on the same setup. Remote App Server and RDP also in use for iPads and home use - you can tell I'm hedging my bets.

If you create a page using an html editor with iframes in then upload it to Fronter the iframes still work. You can have some of the iframes point back to Fronter pages to give the impression that they are integrated. Sorry CFP for repeat. Does anyone get the same issue as this? 1. PXE Boot desktop to WDS Server 2. Solution Accelerator screen comes up with Image options 3. Joy but 1. PXE Boot laptop to WDS Server 2. Misery Doesn't seem to matter which laptop I try (have used Dell Latitudes and Fujitsu Siemens Tablets) I just can't get the imaging process to get to the pick Image task section. I've injected drivers and the image works fine on the same laptops if I Imagex it from a booted USB hard drive.

I think that PMs are the appropriate medium for informing people of problems with something like a job advert or their website. No-one wants a trail of their mistakes haunting them forever and by PMing you offer constructive criticism rather than publicly humiliating.

As someone who posts jobs I think the locked jobs section is a great idea. By all means take a discussion about the job off to another area, but if people want to see jobs on EduGeek then Senior Management within schools need to be convinced of its worth and that it offers access to skilled professionals (not crazed pedants). Incidentally, I do have some control over salaries and think that those we have offered are reasonable for the field in which we work. If you want big bucks you were seriously misdirected by your careers officer when they said "Why not work in education IT support?"

I notice some of the others commenting in this section have had trouble connecting Fujy stuff to their Extricom network. Has anyone had any luck resolving this as we are about ready to chuck 64 perfectly good tablet PCs in the bin. Suggestions (the fit to print ones at least) so far include - 1. Upgrading to Windows 7 I'm going to try this with a new image this week and will post results. 2. Editing DHCP settings Think we've done this but my old network manager was doing most of the fiddling so I will have to check. 3. Use most recent wireless drivers Tried this and finally got down to bitterly disappointing converstaion with FS engineers in Germany (I think) who went from "you need to download this bios update" to "there is no such bios update, it must be Extricom" within the space of 2 wasted days. 4. Firmware update for Extricom kit Used this and it fixed a problem with Vista laptops not being able to logon wirelessly but then working OK if you disconnected Ethernet and went to wireless. 5. Polling fix for XP Done that, seemed to work. May have been a bit helpful but still not resolved issue. Any help welcome but no "ha ha told you so" as I may well cry.

While I wish that we had stayed on SharePoint I think it is possible to use Fronter and do some good looking pages. We have transferred almost all of our curriculum content for the departments selected to take part in a pilot to Fronter and the students are using it to access and upload work from outside school. I think a key element has been making sure that there was SCORM content available for all departments so that they could see some resources before taking the plunge and adding stuff themselves - although of course we had brought the SCORM stuff for SharePoint and it worked fine there. In line with a lot of the other users here, what we're doing at the moment is using Serif WebPlus to make frontpages for 'Rooms' as this lets you get round the restrictive container nature of Fronter's own tools. Weirdly, although Fronter blocks using IFrames in text containers now if you use them in an html page which you upload then they work fine.

We will be trying to position the job so that it is more a curriculum ICT development role than ICT support and therefore retained by the school through BSF rather than tuped to Northgate. Closing date Jan 15th which is why I'm trying to source through EduGeek as I figure it's quicker than paper based ads and I know that there are plenty of talented people here already working in similar environments.

Or (now that I'm on a rant) when you get 2 or 3 stores from the same corporate group next to each other on some retail park selling broadly the same things - just knock the wall down, stop pretending you know any more about tumble driers than you do about switches and pack in trying to confuse people.
