Guest richard Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 I'm looking at adding a NAS device onto the curriculum network here to provide some additional storage. In the last last month the school seems to have gone photo happy and have taken some 4 gigs of pictures which they want to keep on the network for future reference. I would woiuld also like to move things like my Ghost images off the server as they aren't used that often. I have just been looking at a 1TB Buffalo Terrastation as a possible solution but am wondering if this would be overkill for the school? I ahd though of buying a large USB drive but I would like to have some sort of redunancy built into it.

webman Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Well either the Buffalo device (quite popular on here, we have 2 of the TeraStation Pros) or have a look at the Thecus stuff. Either the N2050 or the N2100 would be ideal - 2 disks, RAID1 mirrored.
Geoff Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Got a couple of Terastations here for backup purposes. They work ok. Just be careful about the Active directory integration. On some model/firmware combinations it appears not to work.

Midget Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 DO NOT GET A NETGEAR SC101 You probably weren't going to, but I have seen no end of these devices come in for recovery, and 9/10 times they can't be recovered. Do not get any NAS/SAN device that requires you to use their software, else it will just end in tears.

john Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 I also own Terrastores, but also have used Linkstation Pros, which are very similar in the rear to the Terrastores, but are slimmer and only one disk, so no RAID but I got a 500gb one for £100 on special about 4 months ago, and it supports AD.

The software is flaky as hell, the access is quite slow and my one overheated the drive to such an extent that it smelled of burning when you opened the case 8O It lasted less than a week with me before being despatched back from whence it came!
Guest richard Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I do have room in the server for additional drives but I don't like keeping "all my eggs in one basket" That is why I am looking at a separate device. As for the Netgear I wasn't even looking at that because I had heard it was problematical.
