Robunta Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Hi there, I'm just wondering if many edugeek members use second life? Has anybody found any useful work-related resources? I've heard there is a UK Education Island with an NAACE virtual lounge although I've yet to visit it! I think second life could be a good opportunity to put together a collection of resources and interest groups and I can see a real benefit in attending conferences and meetings in second life - would save time, money and there's the 'green' benefit! Are there any plans to give edugeek a home on second life?
TechMonkey Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 The problem I have is what can be done there that can't be done easier or more open with current tools all ready available. Also can you filter the more interesting aspects of SL like you can the web. Plus from what I hear if you were to get too many people turning up to the conference or resource it would crawl to a halt or get laggy.
logonui Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 tried using second life but i just found it anoying having buildings floating in the air and it didn't help that my machine couldn't quite cope wit it
srochford Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Is any one using Second Life behind ISA 2004? I can't get rules to allow the traffic out!
Jake Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Personally, I would rather stab both my eyeballs repeatedly with a SATA cable than set a virtual foot in second life
ChrisC Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Personally, I would rather stab both my eyeballs repeatedly with a SATA cable than set a virtual foot in second life We need an edugeek hall of quotes for this sort of thing! A section of the site, where a quote is voted in weekly etc? The kids threw a wobbly here when habbo hotel was filtered. Chris
webman Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Personally I don't see the big fascination with Second Life. I'm with Jake on this one
ChrisC Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Not to be too generic, but from most of the news i've heard and magazine articles etc, the main emphasis of second life appears to be sex etc.... Chris
TechMonkey Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Me too, it does seem like a lot of PR guff has shot it to the forefront so it seems like the 'Next Big Thing©®' I also have to chuckle that they quote member numbers of 15 squillion but when you ever look at the counter on their website it normally reads a few thousand at anyone time if that! A friend has a great sig that says somethign along the lines of "You don't have much of a first life so why would I want to interact with you in your Second Life"
Robunta Posted July 6, 2007 Author Posted July 6, 2007 Personally, I would rather stab both my eyeballs repeatedly with a SATA cable than set a virtual foot in second life haha brilliant - Don't sit on the fence there Jake! I've only used it a couple of time and it has crashed on me once or twice due to hardware acceleration issues which I can't get round without turning it off (v annoying) but I didn't find the experience that offensive and I can think of lots of things that could work well in the environment... I've just yet to find many!
GrumbleDook Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 I know exactly what you mean, Jake ... who wants to spend after after hour in a virtual environment relying on a graphical interface to provide stimulation ... Bring back MUD is what I say ...
webman Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Bring back MUD is what I say ... Uugghhh no they're even worse!! :?
beeswax Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 You may find Second Lives by Tim Guest interesting. Or this
Guest Guest Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 the main emphasis of second life appears to be sex What? eh?.. how?.... where?
ChrisC Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 I dunoo, always seems to be a running joke and what the magazines pick up on.... Anyone read the second life neverquests in pczone? Chris
SimpleSi Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Surely, as geeks we should give meeting up in there a go? I've had an account for about a year after the BBC said they'd bought an island for Virtual Concerts (but I've never found it  ) I'm all for giving a meeting a go but we'd need a sad person (sorry, I mean expert in Second Life ) to organise it and guide us novices to where its held otherwise we'll never find each other) Anyone fancy volunteering? regards Simon
GrumbleDook Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 I have created a new account (Grumbledook Hax) as I completely forgot my old one and it is now gone ... I spent ages trying to find various places and never did ... I am presently looking for the EducationUK island, which is where soem of the NAACE members hang out to.
SimpleSi Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 So thats GrumbleDook out as the organiser then ... We'll probably have to send a rescue party in to get him back here regards Simon
Joedetic Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 LOL. It's funny what GrumbleDook and webman say about MUD because one of the IRC networks i use has just bought in a MUD. It's horrid...i signed up and tried it and then never used it again. I hate games...i have no time for games...they are unproductive and just serve to p*ss me off because i'm no good at them. I have a 4U rack of cisco network kit and 4 servers to entertain me...why do i need some online game? lol
t_guest Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 i a fully qualified (SL Policce force officer) my duty is to serve and protect..
t_guest Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 if your looking for some police at your new island im sure the police dept will help out....... just send me a messege on... (callum Qinan)
