Interesting survey. There seem to be a number of similarities (as well as differences) between schools. For instance, Toner storage. Are we all under the mis-guided believe that the Air Con is somehow beneficial to the powder .

 

A couple of other questions do naturally flow from this if we were to compare IT structure between schools.

 

> How many use the server room as an office? (I did at my last school for about a year until teachers were booted out the office opposite).

> How many NM's share an office with other IT staff, or do you have your own? (I've just got my very own office for the first time this year! )

> How far away from the server room is your office? (Previously I was in the next room, techs still are. I'm now half a corridor away but was nearly moved to the other side of the school)

> Do you have a secondary/back up server room? (We have a wall mount cabinet with a 2U NAS box in a remote cupboard)

 

but the question that made me think of this reply...

Mine does. Oh, I've completely change the servers, added storage, virtualisation, etc. But the actual racks, switches, electrics, cabling, room, etc, all pre-date me and might even pre-date my predecessor!

 

Just for completeness, my server room is also on the first floor and the cabinets are both free standing (UPS's along make them unmovable), they are not secured to the walls, floor, ceiling in any way as far as I know,

Lol, no. Its actually pretty detrimental, as when the A/C unit breaks down and leaks all over the boxes it isn't good. Its just a space thing for me.

Would not want my own office. We work as a team, we discuss issues during work flow. Having to go to another office would be detreimental to day to day operation and development.

I have a second 'server room' here - a distant cupboard in a separate building on the other side of the school (with decent network connection!). I put all the oldest servers to use as DCs in there, as well as a couple of minor role machines. Just retiring them now - it'll become the NAS backup room, as close to offsite as I can get onsite!

On this site we have

a distribution room which is probably as big as the server room but has 2 48U cabs for cabling and switches.

a wall rack in a classrom store.

a wall rack in the tightest place in a cupbaord a corridor (very legacy) you can't get to one side of the rack easily as there is a wall in front of it.

 

And down our 5m Pipe we have our sister building with a 5x5 server room (4 42U rack) and 3 distribution rooms 2 with 42u racks and one with a 24u rack.

I thought the same at first, but to be honest I prefer it this way. It makes line management and people management tasks a little easier. And it allows them to get on with work without the feeling that the boss is looking over their shoulder. It's changed the dynamic between us, but I think it was a necessary change and has been for the better. We still work as a team, I'm only two doors away! lol.

5 - Our server cupboard was previosuly a toilet. Actually quite handy for draining air conditioning unit.

11 - BTU output of rack: not sure - about 3 times what our air conditioning can handle

12 - Weight: heavy enough so that when the old air conditioning unit leaked and turned the floorboard rotton, one leg of the rack went through the floor.

13 - Cooling of A/C: about 2kW of cooling power, I think.
