Makes you wonder how much richer Apple would be if they got off their high horse and started making "lesser" phones for people who don't have the need to show off the size of their e-penis or e-boobs. I need a phone. That texts, browses the internet, grabs my email and oh, makes phone calls. Camera is nice too.

So explain why someone who just needs the basics should be spending £500 on a pseudo-premium phone that does exactly the same for them, as a £100 phone. The UI? My Nan can do all the above on a non-smartphone. She's no genius.

(Not particulary related to iphone 5, but most devices)

The same reason you buy a bigger car, house, pc etc :) Whether it's down to wanting more space/speed, having too much money, or "needing" it because all your friends do. etcetc

There is no reason to get a 2litre car, over a 1.4, both work, both do the same job etc etc.

End of day with all new luxury items that come out, some people will want them, some don't.

Hmm, that example may have some holes, your average 1.4l would shake itself to bits on some of the roads here. :)

Looking at everything that is "New" on the iPhone 5 and iOS6, the only thing that seems good is the updated stuff for China, and the panoramic camera view photo thing, but everything that is new (minus the stuff listed previous by myself in this post), everything has been available on Droid/WP for a while.

The reason why i love apple phones is .. Not only are they great to use and are the best phones out there period ... They Keep so much of there phone value !

Just sold my old iphone 4 for £230 after having it for 2 years .

I managed to bag one of the iPhone 5's 2 mins after going on Pre-Sale , so here's hoping apple keep to there word !

I always prefer buying my phone and getting a cheaper Sim only contract , my current one is £5 a month after quidco :D

And yes i am a apple fanboy , use my ipad every day .. Actually replaced my car HU with a custom ipad bezel

Only one thing to say to that: madness.

Really depends ,

If i was to get a normal phone and keep it for 2 years on a £35 month contract , will be £840 ( most decent smart phones to get the phone free require 24 months ) . The phone will also be worth diddly squat after 2 years .

iPhone costs £530 - £230 for old phone = £300 + 24 months contract @ £5 a month = £420 ( and that's based on a 24 month contract ! most sim only deals are 12 months)

Even though i wont get as many minutes with the sim only deal @ £5 , it more than covers my needs :D

Only one thing I can say about people on £35 a month contracts.

But if you cba with the hassle of saving yourself a few hundred pounds (and obviously can afford it) then fair enough.

I do have to say that the value holding thing is real though, some idiot dropkick just paid $25 more for an iPhone 3GS here in NZ than it cost them to replace it with a dual 1GHz Android phone. That kind of idiocy is the basis for whole markets of sheep willing to pay over the odds for the same grass they consume every day.

What's up with them? My contract is £46 less 25% so it comes out at about £35.

Last month I sent 17,000 texts (not sure how but I did!) and used about 700 minutes. Now I don't do that every month but for £35 I'd say I have had my moneys worth?

Edit: Oh and used 2GB data too.

17k texts? Holy mother of Brian May, how on earth do you find time to do anything else? :D

I should perhaps have said "for the majority of people who send up to 1k texts and make the odd call". Certainly, at least for calls only the average person rarely needs to spend more than £10 a month (which on average currently equates to around 3000 texts and 1000 minutes with 500mb-1GB data). Data rates are negligable thankfully as providers realise that the "phone" part of a phone does less than the apparently "smart" part of the phone does.

17k texts? Explain! Thats over 550 texts a day?? 35 texts an hour if you're awake for 20 of them?

You certainly need to do maths : in some case it does work out cheaper than for instance taking your case, getting a large bolt-on for texts, but it's still nothing more than a high rate loan.

Ok where did you sell it for £230? Best I found was £160?

I want to see pics of this iPad as a hu in car. This interests me.

I sold my iPhone 4 for £185 to a local guy on Friday. I'm without a phone this week but decided to shift it with the best offer I could find just in case prices dropped. O2 were not offering much but CPW offered me £165 so I was happy with £185 cash.

Well done for getting £230 - in addition I have gone from a 32Gb down to 16Gb as I didn't see the need for a larger phone.

Is it legal to have the iPad as the HU?

Really not sure... I didn't look into it too much. I'll see what it comes out at this month. I'm awake for less than 20!

Damn, even more impressive then!

I've seen someone do an android based HU for a car on a galaxy S2. Decent sized screen was more than enough and it had 64gb of storage on the SD card so plenty of room for music. It used the inbuilt mapping thing for GPS which worked rather well. Ipad seems oversize for that purpose IMO.

Can I make a suggestion? ;) Use your phone to 'talk'... 17,000 texts could then be reduced down to 20 minutes chatting on the phone...
