Rawns Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 (edited) Not to be confused with the Day Z thread! So, I've just been informed about this game: The War Z: The Survivor MMO Zombie Game coming to you this fall! Looks very interesting. Another survival horror game in the MMO style with no fees. It sounds seriously good! The War Z is the world's first survival mmo Zombie Game. You may have played Zombie Games before - now it's time to live one. It's been five years since the outbreak; leaving in its wake a post-apocalyptic nightmare with ninety-five percent of the human population gone. In order to stay alive, you will need food, weapons, and other supplies. Some of you will be able to scavenge as you navigate the terrain, others will be forced to fight for survival as you encounter zombies and other players. Every decision will have an impact on whether you live or how quickly you die. Forget subscriptions, forget paid DLC and expansion packs. The War Z is as simple as this - once you install the game to your computer, you will be able to get into the game quickly and play without worrying about subscription fees, no hidden fees, and no paid updates. All updates will be seamlessly delivered to you free of charge when they're released. Add AAA graphics and effects mixed with the ability to run even on integrated video cards or low end laptops and you have a unique, fun, experience that is available to everyone Choose one of the hundreds of servers to play on. Each Zombie Game world has an area of up to 400 square kilometers. As more worlds become available, just switch between them at any time, without losing your character's data, or paying any "world transfer fees". Start playing in our first world "Colorado", today, and prepare yourself to join other gameplay locations scattered around the world as we release more and more content. Create your own survival experience by selecting one of the available characters, customizing them and helping them to navigate through hostile world of The War Z. Gain experience and spend it to learn dozens of available skills in this Zombie Game. NO CLASSES AND RESTRICTIONS, NO LEVELS, OR UNREALISTIC STAT MODIFICATIONS. Your goal is to survive this Zombie Game and the ones that survive longest will be victorious! As you progress through this Zombie Game, exploring what happened, you will find notes and diaries that NPCs and other players left for you. These will have hints to the whereabouts of supplies and weapons you will need to survive. The War Z is an open world Zombie Game; as you explore and immerse yourself in this post-apocalyptic world you'll discover more than you ever imagined. You will find yourself hiding from zombies and other players; exploring hidden parts of the map and discovering hidden stashes throughout your journey. It's not easy to stay in touch with your friends in most games. This has been a key feature of War Z Zombie Game from the beginning. You are able to create a group, with friends, and then automatically join the same Zombie Game server together. You will also have the option to rent and manage custom servers without leaving the Zombie Game. Players can create either public or private servers, allocating reserved slots to their friends or group members. The ARMA2 world is 225Km2, at 400Km2 it's almost double the size! Considering now that an estimated 60% of players in DayZ hack, will anyone be considering this as an alternative, or will you be holding out for the DayZ stand alone? DMcGuigan Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 You're making me choose?! Aw man.. I'll probably get them both, or at least try 'em. No sub fees for either so can always go back and forth. One will always do something better than the other.
aerospacemango Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Yep.....Put my name down for it! Screenshots look nice....
Rawns Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 The War Z is now available to pre-order and includes Alpha access on the 15th and Beta Access on the 31st. https://account.thewarz.com/preorder/preorder.html Three package levels with different perks for each. bushby Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 iv been following this since it was announced and i am about to preorder today i think im goin for the $60 package just because i have more monkeys then sense
Rawns Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 iv been following this since it was announced and i am about to preorder today i think im goin for the $60 package just because i have more monkeys then sense Think I'm swaying that way too. By the time it's converted from USD to GBP, it's roughly £30 for the top pack which is no more then any new major release. I wondered where they were going to make their money. The "In game currency" gives that away.

apeo Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Saw mention of this before but didn't really know what the game is about.. now that I know, it sounds kinda cool but currently addicted to GW2 so don't think I will have time for this .
flyinghaggis Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Struggling to decided whether to pre-oder this or not. The concept looks really cool and being a fan of DayZ I'd love to finally get to play a finished Zombie MMO game. However looking at some of the gameplay videos it's obvious that the game is still in alpha as a lot of the basics still need serious work (zombie animations/AI, sound effects, etc). That and some posts on the web are even going so far as to claim it's a scam and simply a quickly thrown together mod of another game (War Inc.?) in order to cash in on the dayZ craze. I hope the devs do take the time to complete the game as it looks like it has potential though.
Theblacksheep Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Is the $0-$15-$30 of ingame currency ringing any alarm bells for anyone? Lose all that equipment when you die, just buy it again! It is a mod of WarInc, no great deal. Fifa13 is a mod of Fifa12, COD is a mod of the previous COD, of course all packaged up as a new product for you to buy every year. For me its the obvious rip from dayz, the basic survival using water, food, backpacks, the talk of zombie aggro (although they dont look like a challenge at all) or really hurting yourself from a small fall. They've taken the good bits from DayZ, added the worst from modern games (pay2win) and made it more like COD (never a good move in my book). No thanks.
Rawns Posted October 16, 2012 Author Posted October 16, 2012 So the Alpha is out. Anyone had a chance to have a play? On a more "mooching" note, I've had to put getting it on hold. Therefore, if anyone who did pre-order it happens to have a spare "guest key" that they would like to donate to a fellow Edugeeker, much love, +rep and virtual eduhobnobs would be sent your way.
DMcGuigan Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Just bought this tonight, worth giving it a shot. I have three guest passes going PM me if interested.
LiamH Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Lost my entire weekend to this game (just had toe surgery so had to stay in, that's my excuse anyway!) Really enjoying it, so much so that i felt the need to share some of my experiences on the forums. Some raven unit stories.
DMcGuigan Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 So far I'm a bit.. well, meeeeh about it. There doesn't seem to be much of a community to it. I've met 12 people in the past day or two, they've all attempted to kill me. 2 have succeeded, the others didn't realise that the shotgun on my back was loaded! I still keep my eye on it though, may get a nice group eventually!
LiamH Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Most people in game are shoot first ask after, i think the main reason is the lack of proximity VOIP, by the time you have typed "hi i'm friendly want to group up" you would prob be dead. Think they plan to add it soon. I think your best bet for grouping is finding people outside the game to play with, IE a clan/mates who play. They are bringing in a buddy and clan system soon, which should be nice. The only person who has stopped to chat to me in proximity was yesterday after i clipped him with my silenced AK, he went prone and said "friendly, i will help you kill those guys up ahead" trouble is i was lookout for those guys up ahead.
DMcGuigan Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I get the "Friendly" spiel quite a lot, then they try a pickaxe to the face. First guy got my SMG emptied into him, all 5 rounds that were left Stole his pickaxe though, then was running around with some guy for 5/10 minutes, he tried to kill me with a flashlight. Didn't really want to kill him, he showed me how to quickly melee kill, but it came in handy. For the record, pickaxe > flashlight.
Dom_ Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 lol, sounds fun - if anyones got any guest invites left I'll give it a go!
DMcGuigan Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I think I still have one, I'll PM you it if I do.
flyinghaggis Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Just noticed this has been released on steam though I think it's still in alpha/beta. Is anyone still playing it? Worth a punt for £10 if you enjoyed Day z? http://store.steampowered.com/app/226700/
featured_spectre Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Its fun, but the 6 character limitation (at least that was on the alpha) was annoying as hell, not to mention the 1 hour re-spawn wait!! That said the "ex cage fighter" character had the strongest hit with the torch (3 hits for a zombie to drop compared to 5-7 with the other 4 classes) The "ex military" character has the most health compared to the other 4 The hunter character has the best rifle/gun accuracy compared to the other 4 The "rebel without a cause" has the best longevity (in terms of not needing to eat food) The "average joe" is just that...average

Save 10% on The War Z on Steam The Steam link originally had complete lies about the features in the game, size of maps, players, servers, not stating its not finished (as mentioned by the dev)... completely false advertising and I'm surprised Steam let them. Entering dayz as a search term on steam, more than cheeky. Pay to win and pay to respawn (now 4 hours), great for the devs to cash in on another games popularity. Good luck to whoever gives this company money. Edited December 19, 2012 by Theblacksheep 1

Good luck to whoever gives this company money. But having played both i can say aside from the hacking issue (which still happens in dayz) Warz is a much better, more polished game. Pay to win? if getting some food or ammo without looting saving you 5 minutes then sure.. Pay to respawn? if you are dying that much in that amount of time you really should be playing another game. I never get these "but its a rip of of X game!" arguments, sure it saw how successful Dayz was being and thought "we could do that but better" if everyone had your logic on not improving on an existing idea because it already exists we would still be driving around in ford model A's
Rawns Posted December 19, 2012 Author Posted December 19, 2012 (edited) But having played both i can say aside from the hacking issue (which still happens in dayz) Warz is a much better, more polished game. IMO, DayZ is a far superior game in every manor. True, while DayZ only looks as polished graphically on a top end rigs, it still has a While there are still hackers in game, the number has dropped considerably (and they tend to be more on the custom worlds now that utilise custom code making it easier for hackers!). There there is hacking in The War Z too, only the mods excessively kick/ban hackers and innocent parties kin an attempt to gain control which causes loads of complaints (check out their forums for details) Pay to win? if getting some food or ammo without looting saving you 5 minutes then sure.. A prime example there of why they developers can cash in with the 'pay to win' system. If they game was any good, there would be sufficient resources for people to scavenge like in DayZ. And that's the whole point of a game like DayZ/WarZ, savaging and survival. The ability to quickly pay to gear up just removes a kep part of the games mechanics. The devs know people will pay so they can cash in on it. Pay to respawn? if you are dying that much in that amount of time you really should be playing another game. This is the worst thing I have ever seen in a game. Pay to respawn? With the volume of bandits, bambie hunters and those who just kill for fun after saying "friendly", chances are you will die more often then not. Again, the developers see this and have been clever and introduced another way to pull in more revenue, and people will pay to use the same character. I never get these "but its a rip of of X game!" arguments, sure it saw how successful Dayz was being and thought "we could do that but better" if everyone had your logic on not improving on an existing idea because it already exists we would still be driving around in ford model A's I'd hardly call The WarZ a case of "we could do that but better". The devs could see how popular DayZ had become so took an existing game (War Inc) where most of the mechanics were in place (including pay to play), effectively modded it as quickly as possible to match the primary features of DayZ and get it out there before the DayZ stand alone. As far as I can see, nothing has been implemented better. And with the recent farce of Steam, it just goes to show that it's more of a money making tool for the devs. Edited December 19, 2012 by Rawns
LiamH Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 I'd hardly call The WarZ a case of "we could do that but better". Here are some of the reasons i think WarZ is a more polished game. The AI is much better, zombies behave a lot more like classic zombies should, no unexplained slowdown while inside buildings, no infinite sprinting and american football juke's and no teleporting up ladders. Optimization, you don't need the most up to date rig to make warz look good, its based on a modernish engine that is a lot smoother. Usability, Dayz is a pain to install, a pain to get running correctly and even once you have got in game the UI is terrible. In contrast Warz has a simple launcher and a easy UI. Social tools, While i like DayZ's in-game proximity VOIP (one of the only games it useful in) the pain of trying to find the people you play with in game, Sure its more realistic, but most of the time it is tedious if you enjoy playing with others. With squad tools hopefully coming soon it will be even easier. Maps, Dayz has a much bigger map, but it is mainly empty and uninteresting. WarZ promotes interaction with other player's and when inside city's and towns there are a greater number of accessible buildings. Items, the guns are more interesting to use in Warz, the ability to find attachments ads another level of equipping yourself to survive. I like the fact you can use vanity items to distinguish yourself too. In summery they are both games i enjoy, and hopefully when the Dayz standalone is released it will resolve many of the problems i have with the mod. I don't think a game should be slammed due to the fact it is following the success from another game, some of the best games out there took inspiration from prior games and should be judged on it's on merit or lack of. I dont begrudge any game developer's trying to make money, with all the developers going bust at the moment it is good that they can. I don't like the pay-to-win model in Warz and wont use it myself, but to be fair its more pay-for-convenience
