SIMS & SQL Server

A while ago I am sure I read a post indicating that SIMS was about to get expensive, with it not running on free SQL anymore, can anybody point me in the direction of this post as I have searched but cannot find it anywhere.

No more expensive than it has always been....

 

You are probably thinking of the switchover to SQL 2005 due to happen in September.

 

Whether you need to upgrade to full SQL2005 is dependant on your requirements, but you will have to upgrade from MSDE to SQL Express (the updated, but still free version of MSDE)

What are the criteria dictating which version of SQL2005 is needed, e.g. is it no. of users or something else? Trying to work out the budget hit!

To be honest the cost of the full SQL 2005 isn't really too expensive I paid around £250 for it from Ramesys a few months back.

The main reason for upgrading is database size. The new version supports up to 4G FOC.

£250? - we had been led to believe it would cost about ten times that!

SQL Pricing from Ramesys:

 

£105 per server plus £13.50 per CAL

 

OR

 

£789 per installed CPU, no CALs required.

We had been I've posted this before but last year we paid £42 for a server license for SQL and £2.87 per CAL. This was with TME (South West) Ltd.

 

This was via a schools agreement. So I expect to pay around £600 if I move to SQL server (we didn't buy them this year as we weren't using it).

Has anyone seen any more information on the SQL Server update process? My problem is that we have other SQL databases which need to stay in MSDE, and I'm worried that the Capita automated update to Express is going to rain all over my other databases. I've asked Capita's support helpdesk about this before and just get vague, woolly answers...

The utility was demoed at Keele this year, it explicetly asks you which DB you want to convert, as I remember it it only allows you to convert one DB each time you run the utility so you shouldn't have to worry about it converting all of your DBs.

That sounds promising, DreddMetal, thanks. I've just had an email from someone at Capita who also suggests it is that straight-forward; I'm just cautious as we've been burnt with Capita updates before (haven't we all!) and I can't afford to lose the other MSDE database.

Nah the utility to change DBs will work easily and the FMS side isn't very difficult either. Capita have taken time to write this utility because it is a major change for them and if all the customers got burnt they'd have a mass exodus on their hands!
