For past years, I've been converting videos into .flv (and sometimes .swf) as that seemd to give most chance of people being able to view them on PCs/Macs/IE/FF etc. and uploading them to my school websites (mainly use Joomla and the AllVideos module for playback)

But now, I'm getting feedback from pupils/parents saying they can't view the videos on their Ipads :(

So looking for practical suggestions on how to move onwards :)

If you dont have restrictions on youtube you can host them there and use
{youtube}heu37ej3qs{/youtube}

in your AllVideos plugin instead. this works on ipads IIRC

I convert all videos to wmv format for use on the schools joomla website

WMV wont play on an iOS device unfortunately.

Isn't mp4 pretty much the most widely supported cross platform video container? HTML5 video tags certainly support it. I'm sure you can embed mp4 video into a webpage without HTML5 support as well.

We mostly block youtube in my schools on the curric network so we wouldn't see them in school :(

Well looking into the future how about using HTML 5?

I didn't realise the coding was so easy and compact - I'll have a play and see what problems it throws up

YouTube it and let them deal with it ;)

Both Flash and HTML5 video - will play on anything without issue.

Funnily enough the head asked me about videos to put on the website as well. I was just curious as to what restrictions and set up you had for the youtube account? eg unlisted vids etc. I was thinking of making a school youtube account hence the question.

The only problem you should have with HTML5 is users running older browsers so you'll probably want to include a couple of embed tags for them.

Ahh :( Just noticed that IE on XP won't handle it so that's a bit of a no-no as well :(

And a week later, I think my brain has clicked into place.

I'd so locked myself into flv as being the "mutli-platform" playback format that I'd ignored mp4 !

Could you all try out

St Leonards CE Primary School

and just confirm that it plays back (or not as the case maybe) in your browser(s)

All I had to do was stick

{mp4}class6/re2012/David and Goliath animation final version_x264{/mp4}

in my joomla article (I use the AllVideos plugin) and it did it all for me :)

Nope. But, we're using IE7...

It's also popping up a MIME type config error. And asks if you want to restore them back to quicktime.

Regardless of whether you choose yes or no, it breaks.

All that's shown is a black box on the website with a broken quicktime file icon.

Will post images if requested.

I'll think if they work across IPad Safari, IE8, IE9, Chrome and Firefox then I'll be happy.

Works here on an Ipad and Chrome and IE8 on XP
