HaleStorm Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Looks really good, especially as its got the Tegra 3 chip running it...plus 1GB RAM...i'd be inclined to go for the 16gb version though. Also noticed you get a free copy of Transformers 3 and £15 play store credit...which is useful if you have an android phone aswell because you can get the app/film/book/music on more than one device then
tmcd35 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Haven't seen all the spec's yet but my first reaction was that the price is very apealing. I think, though, that Google and Microsoft share a problem in the app availability front. Obviously Googles apps store is a lot more complete compared to M$'s fledgling effort. We bought three tablets recently to test their use. Windows 8 was just aweful. Android 4 really nice, maybe iOS beating, system. But when it came to finding apps to put on these devices nothing could get close to the iOS App Store content.

If it can be used how i want it to be then the price and is very appealing and it means i dont have to lug my laptop around to use the things i do.

Apple might have more, but do we really need 100,000 lightsaber/torch apps? No, its quality thats the important thing, and so far, Android apps are just that tiny bit less polished.
north-ict Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 I was looking to buy a kindle at some point and i spotted this yesterday, granted its full colour display as opposed to a eink display and only has 10 hours battery compared to 1 month nearly on e-ink, but seems very interesting.

A Kindle and a tablet are very different devices with very different uses, a Kindle is only for reading books on - I mean, sure, you could browse the internet on it, but then you could also replace all your toilet roll with sandpaper. You could also read on a tablet, but it's nothing like as comfortable or convenient as reading on a Kindle - the e-ink screen really does make all the difference with regards to comfort, not to mention battery life. I am waiting for the moment in three years time when we have a colour e-ink multitouch screen with a keyboard in the cover that has a month's battery, waterproofing and reasonable tools to manage it. At that point, goodbye textbooks!

Ok, I suppose what I meant to say was "Quality application availability". The fact is we tried to set the three systems up with, if not the exact same apps, then the closest aproximations. We couldn't do it breadth of apps on iOS sets it clearly appart from it's competitors. This is what Google desperatly needs to work on. Getting quality iOS devs to port their wears to what other whys is now a very polished platform. Loading Googles appstore I found a breadth of "porn apps" at the top of the charts and found there to be more of the "another lighter/lightsaber/etc" type apps. The biggest miss for me was lack of any Ampkit+ alternative, but thats a more personal gripe.

Typically we pay more!! Nah, the price they list in the US is not the price they end up paying a lot of the time. They have to also pay whatever sales taxes are in place to do so. The price difference for us is usually down to import duties and VAT.

Just pre-ordered mine Had a look at some of the other tablets but for the price/spec nothing comes even remotely close. The lack of SD card slot is annoying but given it's my first forray into the android ecosystem I hopefully wont miss it too much. Edited June 28, 2012 by flyinghaggis
