Nearly out of Space

Hi,

From leaving on Monday to this morning my server is almost full well 21 gb left.

 

Is something like Treesize free ok to install on the server to see whats going on? Im guessing its some large photo albums that have gone on there.

You might consider using file quotas or perhaps moving some shares around to other servers?

It works perfectly fine on 2k8 R2 If you install it on a seprate machine and just copy the contents of the install folder you can even run it from a network drive do you don't install anything you don't want to on your server.

You seem to be suffering from JPG-itus, its caused by staff buying cameras willy-nilly and thinking that they really do need 20 mega-pixel units for those tiny little snaps kids use in work for assessment and not understanding that those 20 mega-pixel photos could make an image the size of most schools rooves in perfect details for the Hubble Telescope to read!

 

When I get hold of any Dept. camera it gets set to VGA mode straight away!

This problem as arose again, how difficult will it be to add additional drives to the server, it is just going to be as simple as adding drives to a desktop, or will they be more faffing about?

Are the Bays hotswap or mounted internally ?

 

What type of disk do you want to add - SAS or SATA ?

some time spent analysing the space and using something like faststone to reduce large images down to a sensible size would be what i would be looking at doing.

rather than adding capacity where it might not be needed.

Give them an inch and they'll take a mile, er, give them a centimeter and they'll take a kilometer. If you've got a few users eating that much space in that little time then adding disk to the server is probably going to make the problem worse. I'd try working with the user(s) on it first. What is taking up all the room, pictures, video? I've had teachers dump video to our NAS of a school play filmed in 1280x1024 at 60FPS. Showing them how to alter the quality settings on the camera cured the issue for the most part.

Don't your users find that 100Gb in total is restricting how they use IT? Give them more space. LOTS AND LOTS more space. Don't forget to ensure you can back it up though.

 

It is easier quicker and less long term stress than faffing about trying to prune them back. Personally I only have words with teachers when one of them crossed the 40GB mark.

Eeep, we have individual users with more data than that, I'd look at both upgrading the storage and cracking down on how they use it if they are filling it pointlessly with 20megapixel images from cameras with lenses that will max out at around 3megapixels of optical resolution.

Ok bit of a Noob question but how do i find out if its a hotswap drives? Also we got the server built for us and I assume its RAIDED will i have to set this up as well.

 

These are the drives we have in already Toshiba 300Gb 6Gbps SAS Hard Drive 3.5 Inch

 

Its the head thats talking up most of the space and they want more storage added.

Hey Matt,

 

Depending on the chassis and backplane used, this will indicate whether they are hot/coldswap bays, the raid controller could be onboard or a discrete card (again depending on what was originally supplied by your vendor).

 

if you want to PM over some details from the people that built it (i.e. specs etc), I'd be happy to take a look at it for you and see what options are available for adding additional space.

I implemented quotas this summer after getting fed up with clearing drive space 16 times in one year! We now have the following:

 

KS3 Students - 500Mb

KS4 Students - 1Gb

KS5 Students - 1.5Gb

 

Staff 4Gb

SLT 6Gb

 

Students studying specialist photography and media courses get a separate drive with their name on where they can store their photos or saved iMovie projects on. This is on a 1TB drive which is monitored by the course tutors who will also use this area to collect in and check students work as they go along. They will also check that they are using the space appropriately.
