I feel old....

 

I went to WH Smith the other day to buy a present for my wife. I was looking around for a while and had to ask for help;

 

Me: Where are your music CD's please?

Shop person: We don't sell them anymore sir.

 

 

Curiously, they do still sell blank VHS tapes, cassette tapes and floppy disks!! Well I say "sell", they have them on the shelves.....

A long time ago, they used to be a bookshop...

Times change. They used to sell computers in the '80s. They've still got an humongous range of magazines, though. That reminds me, I must pick up this month's copy of "Rings, Wings, Bings, Mings, Stings, Kings & Tings" magazine.

 

It's my favourite.

When I read the title of the post it reminded me for a split second that W.H Smith went bust a few yrs ago. That was Woolworths of course. What I think is telling is that there is a W.H Smith around 300yrds from my house. It's just such a useless shop that I've almost scrubbed it from my mind.

Must admit i got some gift vouchers (£30) for WH Smith and when i went to have a look i could find absolutely nothing to spend them on that i actually wanted, ended up just getting a really expensive pen that i have never used to save them expiring.

My first "proper" job was at WH Smith. I'm always amazed that they're still going as even then many of the branches seemed to struggle.

One of my local ones (Worcester) has the only Post Office in town in there now, its always busy because of that.

I keep them afloat by buying every WW2-related book they stock.

AFAIK a large part of WH SMITH income is from distribution of newspapers/magazines to other retailers.

I imagine they do very, very well at stations and airports, because they sell most things that people need in those places. On the high street though they seem less useful. I went in one recently to look for stationary and it was pretty poor. More than anything it just felt really dated.
