Network DVD Server

Hi all.

 

We currently have an Avantis Open.CD in place that serve CDs and DVDs across the network.

 

We are currently moving to Windows 7 and whilst Avantis do a Windows 7 Client, I have spoken to them and the Open.CD is about to go legacy.

 

I was wondering if anyone could suggest another soloution, either hardware or software, for serving CDs and DVDs across the network?

Copy them to a network share and map drives as needed.

As above - really is pointless this day and age having such servers in place, plus unnecessary cost.

Whilst both answers are credible, they are not practical considering I have over 165 CDs in the existing server. Also with the number of mapped drives already in place, there are not enough letters in the alphabet!

Client side cd/iso emulation? Daemon tools for example.

j17sparky - your the second person to mention Daemon Tools..... it would make sence, then I could just have a monster NAS with the disks copied to for playing. Does Daemon run a video DVD in the same way for example?

You don't need one map per CD though. We have software drives, with hundreds on a single drive. End of day it's just the shortcut that changes to point to a subfolder.

Exactly - conversion to stored media (i.e. to computer playable formats) will have a few benefits - size compared to ISOs/images and bandwidth consumed compared to streaming a DVD will be hugely improved. You won't even need any sort of "huge nas" for that sort of thing - a reasonable PC with a couple of 2tb drives in raid1 for redundancy will munch through that task.

Yeap, DVD/CD servers are really a depreciated way of doing things that went out of fassion quite a while ago, shared folders with the content in it and damon tools mounted ISOs shared out for those old titles with disk checking.

We have one of these CD servers but most software is either being removed as it's rather out-dated or being moved to a shared area which is 1 mapped drive then a bunch of folders inside that share for each CD. Not had any problems just test everything is ok before completely removing from the disc server, can't remember which but some required a little configuring config files and reg's.
