Good morning Edugeekers.... I have a question for you and I’m hoping that others may have come across a similar problem and found a workable solution. I’m in the process of decommissioning an Equallogic and a HP LeftHand SAN and need to move the date from both these to a new HPE Nimble. Now, normally, I would use the Migration in Hyper-V if they were vhdx disks on the SANs, however this is not the case; they are iSCSI direct attached LUNs on the SAN that are presented as disks. These disks are attached to a File Server cluster We have thought about utilising our backup solution as a restore to the new volume, cut over to the new volume and then run a final backup/restore to get the files up to date. Whilst this method works, it’s very time consuming. I was wondering if anyone had come across and used any 3rd party software that would allow for storage level replications between the SANs? Ironically, the migration between SANs was easy as the replication was in place and I just needed to handover to the new SAN! #software #san #fileserver #hpe #nimblestorage

Hi Everyone. Funny one here, just wondered if anyone else had seen this and fixed it? Using Exchange 2010, we are having random users being hidden from the GAL automatically. We have a process whereby any user that leaves will be set to hidden, but at the moment we seem to be having active users also being hidden, randomly. Anyone else seen this? Thanks

Hi Geekers.... I am havign some issues with AppV 5.1 and wondered if anyone else has come across this issue. I have installed the Management and Publishing server on a new Server 2016 box. I have the Database on a SQL 2012 Sp3 box. I have installed the DB using the DB Scripts, which I have fixed and they create correctly. I have 2 AD Groups, Admins and Servers. Everything installs fine and I can import an existing package (from AppV 5) no problem. I have configured a Server 2016 box to be a XenApp client, enabled the built in AppV client and set the AppV publishing server, again all fine. I have published the app and made sure that the computer account has access to it....all fine.... However...... When login in, nothing is showing. In the Event log on the client I am seeing: The content from server is not valid XML for publishing. URL: http://Address:81/ Error code: 0x3E501805 - 0x90001 Getting server publishing data failed. URL: http://address:81/ Error code: 0x3E501805 - 0x90001 HttpRequest sendRequest failed. URL: http://address:81/ Error code: 0x45500D27 - 0x801901F4 Getting server publishing data failed. Morning all I am having a really issue with issue with Hyper-V on Server 2016 at the moment: I have a HPE C7000 Blade chassis with 4 BL460C Gen 8 blades in. I have 2 HP VC FlexFabric 10Gb/24-port Modules in the Interconnect bays. I have the Virtual connect configured like this:. The blades are running Server 2016 Datacenter. The VLANs 100 & 210 are both storage iSCSI connections. VLAN30 is the host management lan. The multiple networks include VLAN 10 for the VMs management, as well as VLANS for live migration and CSV. On the host, I am able to join the domain and ping all the servers on the domain, like the DCs, Exchange etc. However, and this is the issue, I cannot join the domain or ping any servers from any VMs on the hosts (i have 4 that are having the problem). I have checked the network routing and that looks fine and if there was a problem either the routing then I would expect the host to not connect. The VC is configured in the same way as another chassis we have and again i would expect the hosts to not connect if there were a problem with the VC. I have rebuilt the host but it is still the same. Has anyone else come across this before?

Umm not quite correct. I had 33 Server 2008 R2 User CALS and installed them on Server 2016 and they are working correctly. Showing in RD Licensing Manager and being issues to users.

Hmmm....it sounds like you have a lot of issues with your setup. Yes you would have to take the server off line to upgrade, but providing you have enough power in your hosts you should be able to run off the remaining host/s while you do the update. I was in the same situation and done the same thing, now I am on R2 and ready to upgrade to 2016.

Do you have SA with your license? If so you can upgrade free. As for the cluster....it's not that hard to do, and then migrate the servers.

Yes, you don't need the dc in the cluster. You don't have to have any machines in the cluster if you want. Set them up in Hyper-V manager instead of Failover Cluster Manager. It just means it will no failover if there is a problem with the host. Best option is upgrade your hosts to r2 and then upgrade the cluster, then it won't matter. If you don't, the DCs will still operate correctly. You can put a dc where ever you want and providing its part of the forest it will sync.

No harm in running DC's as clustered servers on Hyper-V or VM, but do not install AD on the Hyper-V hosts. 5 DCs seems a bit excessive to me. I have had 1physical and 1virtual in previous secondary school (1200students, 200 staff). Currently I have 2 DCs on my network, one as DHCP server, both are virtual. You can move the FSMO roles to the primary DC (not that primary DCs exist anymore, but you will have a DC that you think of as number 1).

Going to keep the NAS as nothing wrong with that. Debating between an LTO drive, which would require the tapes to be taken off site or another NAS offsite that I can replicate to. Think I will go with the other NAS, as I can install it in one of my shops and replicate across a VPN. Will also look at either Veeam or DPM, budget dependant

Wow, just wow! Makes me glad I am about to change mine! I have inherited a backup that backs up to a NAS and then creates an 'off site copy' to a USB3 HDD! This was 'best practice' the cowboys my charity used to use before I started!

You are correct Boredguy! Never seen these before in my life, and close inspection shows that the white/green cable is not very well connected! Fingers crossed, the new faceplate i have installed will resolve the issues!

Morning everyone. In 20 years working in IT i have never come across this and I have worked with Cat5e all that time, but today, I went to change a faceplate and found 2 resistors on the green pair of the Cat5e. Does anyone know what they are for or why they may have been installed? We have had issues with this connection dropping out on a regular basis and am wondering if these may have been the problem? Afternoon all. I have an interesting problem and wondered if anyone else has come across it also. I have a user that has created a report in Excel 2010 and has protected the sheet (not the workbook) to stop anyone deleting data. The user has saved the file on a network share and then emailed the link to the share and a copy of the file to a number of people. Now, the problem I am seeing is that when people open the file that is attached and then try and print the spreadsheet, the PC is saying the file printed but nothing comes of the printer. Those that open it from the network can print the spreadsheet. The user that cannot print the spreadsheet can print test prints and other spreadsheets. I am at a loss as to what could be causing the issue....any ideas? Wayne

That a top bloke! The answer was.......Authenticated Users had been removed from the Delegation of the Mapped Drives Policy. I add this back in and after a GPUPDATE /Force, I can now see the mapped drives!! Thanks!

Morning everyone I have a problem with my Windows 10 Pro machine on my domain in that the Mapped Drive GPO is not applying. I have a 2003 domain/forest level with 1x 2008R2 DC and 2x 2012R2 DC's (the 2008 is going to be decommissioned). All of the client machines are Windows 7 and the mapping works. It is only not working on my Win10 machine. I have googled and have set the paths in Hardened UNC Paths but nothing. I have set the EnableLinkedConnections reg key. I have installed the Win10 ADMX policy entries into the \\domain\SYSVOL\domain.local\Policies\PolicyDefinitions folder but still nothing. I have run the GPRESULT and the the Mapped Drives policy is not applying but there is nothing in the event viewer to tell me why it is not running. I want to roll out Windows 10 as an OS but daren't if i cannot map drives. Anyone come across this? is it a simple care of updating the domain/forest levels? Banging my head now!

So with DFS, I am assuming i need the same amount of storage on 2 file servers (one on each host)? Also, how does migrating existing shares and permissions from the old server work? I do not want to have to setup all the shares and permissions again

Hi all Looking for some advise with regards to File Server Design. We have Hyper-V running on 2 hosts with iSCSI SAN connected via Cluster Manager for HA. Looking for File Server to manage about 600Gb at the moment. Do I just create 1 File Server with 600Gb of space or Do I create 2 new servers to act as Cluster Hosts, with an iSCSI Connection to a SAN LUN and then create a File Server Role in that new cluster? i.e. cluster within a HA Cluster? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi I was wondering what you r physical layer looked like as I am in the process of trying to design a file server and wondering whether to: a.) have one VM FS sitting on HA Hyper-V Cluster with 600Gb of disk space or b). have 2 VM FSs sitting on HA Hyper-V Cluster with new cluster created with the 2 new FSs as hosts and connected to SAN LUN and then create File Serve role from Cluster manager? Any thoughts?

Don't get stressed......as the one never to have lost his job to a bunch of backstabbing consultants. The consultants that audited my network were the ones that I worked with, took their advice, installed their recommendations and then they slated it in order to sell managed services. I lost the job I loved because of them, so excuse me if I sound bitter and sceptical about your experience. It has taken me 18months to pick myself up and get back to the level that I was at; to rebuild my confidence, and to be honest it is still work in progress. I am managing an IT department again, but I didn't know I was ready when offered the job, but I knew I was ready to try. I'm not saying this will happen to everyone, but I do have to tell my story as a warning that this does happen.

Hi Ed Sorry to hear yo have been through this! I to have been though this at a school i used to work at, to the point that I had a mental breakdown due to the stress that SLT were causing me. Whilst off sick, the school got a consultant company in that ripped the IT systems apart, which was ironic as it was that company that had helped me to install them. On the back of the report that they produced, the HT suspended me and asked me to a meeting to discuss the findings, which I had produced a 30odd page response to. At that meeting he brought up things like salary and budget, both of which were out of my control! At the end of the process they had no grounds to get rid of me but offered me a compromise agreement to resign, which due to the breakdown in trust, I accepted. I then discovered that the company that produced the report took over as the managed IT Services and since then they have messed the systems up completely! oh how I laugh!!!! So no, you not the only one to have gone through it, but stick to your guns, be strong and don't let the barstools beat you down! And if you are looking for a company to use to help you, DO NOT USE Commercial IT Services in Cheltenham.....
