Detached key off the keypad of a HP Laptop

I have a HP 625 Laptop - not long out of warranty that has a key (the up volume key) detached from the keyboard. The key will not go back as the teeny weany lugs that should hold it to it's holder have vanished.

 

HP Support suggested it would need a complete keyboard replacement. Seems a bit OTT to me when one key would do the job and anyhow it's not a key that makes a difference in use.

Can normally buy individual keys from Ebay for this kind of situation.

In this situation if its not a majorly used key and we really don't want to pay a full price for keyboard then 9 times out of 10 the laptop is just put back into circulation. Then something is published to say that if someone who is found guilty of vandalism will be charged the price of a new keyboard and subject to school consequence system, usually detentions and the like.

 

Although when we did this we had alot of pupils reporting broken keys on laptops, which enabled us to get them all repaired and since then been alot better, we only get the odd one now instead of 15/20 per term

Had the same issue with the same laptop. Bought a replacement key from Ebay which turned out to have the lugs on upside down to the original, so I shaved one lug off with a sharp Stanley blade and super glued it to the old key. Never thought it's work in a million years, but it's been fine since!

Could you not post a pic of the keyboard, we have some HP Probooks in the cupboard, you never know.
