Cable tester

I'm looking for a cable tester. I've seen a few but I'm wonding what people would recomend.

 

A cheep one would be a good start something to make sure all the ends are punched it and there are no basic wiring faults. However if anyone has any suggestions as to devices that can measure the quality/loss of the connections/cabling that doens't cost thousands of pounds that would be helpfull.

 

Whilst I need something anyway, I've recently inherrited another network and it really needs some testing to see how much work it needs doing to it.

I second that: NT750 LanScaper™ Network Testing Kit

While not exactly cheap (I think it'll be around the £250-£300), it's a good kit.

I'm in exactly the same position having inherited the school next door's entire network on top of ours. Although the NT750 looks capable, I'm looking for a more advanced version that can generate reports that I can compile (acceptance testing effectively). I'd also like to be able to test the fibre (up to 10GB).

Fluke 620 (about £120 second hand) I love this thing it's chunky and fast.

 

Moving our workstations up to gigabit has recenttly necessitated the use if this wonder machine again.

I have a JDSU Validator-NT905 - Validator/Certifier here that we use for cat5/6 testing (it also does phone lines), previous technician before me wanted it and its overkill for the school here, considering our phone system is supported and our cat5/6 networks are all working as is from installation, but it is a nice piece of gear that does what you want, I am not sure on the costs of the thing though, it was bought before I started. Seems to be disontinued so it would have to be second hand, interestingly I have seen one second hand for that price, are you selling it Just trying to work out what Fluke's replacemnt is, CableIQ qualification tester look OK but I suspect may be out of my price bracket, there is a Microscanner2 but I'm not sure how much information it gives about the quality...

 

Looked at the Validator, but alas it might be a bit out of my price range again unless I can sweet talk the bursar into not looking too clolsely at what I am spending..
