Deploying IE7

How does everyone else deploy IE7?

 

I used to deploy it through WSUS, but now it's gone (is it just me, or have MS removed it?). MS still haven't released an .msi for it.

 

I'm reading through the IE7 Deployment Guide, but it isn't much help, apart from saying that you have to create your own .msi. Great. Fantastic. Really useful.

 

Any suggestions?

I've rolled it out only as part of a manual windows update so far. After that I then got told im not allowed to as its too secure and that phishing filters will confuse teachers and kids.

 

So today I uninstalled it from a workstation. But its supposed to be incompatible with SIMS. Now I dont beleive that this is an issue as they probably mean it doesnt quite look right if you export something to it.

 

Im not a sims person so I wouldnt actually know what IE is used for with regaurds to it. Neways, I still have installed it on staff machines.

 

In my opinion I think you have to move with the times and new terminology such as phishing is something the kids should learn about.

 

As for rolling it out, I agree... not very helpful. I would of thought WSUS would do this for us. Sorry I couldnt help you.

Thanks. I successfully rolled it out to the whole school a few months ago, and managed it (things like the phishing filter) with GP. No problems.

 

I've just set up some new machines and found that IE7 has not been installed. I noticed that IE7 had disappeared from WSUS a while ago, but thought it would reappear.

 

I also thought the'd have a msi by now.

If you go to Options in your WSUS you can change the products that it will search for one of them is "Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 Dynamic Installer" - this shoul give you the option to install via WSUS.

 

I just did mine via an image update. I've yet to introduce it to the teacher laptops, but I will be doing this Summer. I think tabbed browsing and integrated search bar shouldn't be too taxing...

 

...oops forgot I was working with Digital Luddites...oh well!

You can download the latest adm files for Active Directory from MS and then you can turn off all the tab browsing, configure phishing filter and pop-up blocker to your hearts content.

If you install it on your main domain controller it should put in the ADMs for you....[ Did for me anyhoo ]

Thanks. I've just looked at my WSUS synchronisation options and it already has "Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 Dynamic Installer" listed. I've added a few other products, and now included all update classifications. (Isn't IE supposed to be an Update Rollup? - I already had that listed too).

 

It's synchronising now - I'll see what that produces.

Bum! I'll leave it overnight and check again. It usually syncs every night no problem.

I think you also need to manually approve IE7 for installation to. It wont auto-approve.

The strange thing is that it was working for weeks, then IE7 just 'disappeared' from my WSUS a couple of months ago. I'm certain I didn't change anything (famous last words).

 

I'll manually approved it (again) when (or if) it reappears on the list.

introduced it to the staff laptops. Have no intention at this point to roll it out across the network - Yet. Im testing it on my networked machine, upto now i've had no problems.

 

IMO i think IE6 does the job

I have been using IE7 for over a year now since the very first Beta and have never had a problem with it.

I've installed it manually on a couple of staff laptops that were having problems updating flash and shockwave - sorted that problem out - but how do you prevent every user from having to go through the introduction page when they first use it? Or will setting adm files in gpo stop this?

Nope... its fine with SIMS No doubt the people up the chain are scared of change no doubt

To stop the run once page you need to add a couple of registry entries:

 

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceHasShown] as a value of 1

 

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceComplete] as a value of 1

My WSUS hasn't synchronised successfully for a couple of days. No doubt it'll succeed eventually. Still waiting to see if IE7 reappears after making the changes in options.

In the GP Editor, open "User Configuration" then "Administrative Templates", then "Windows Components", then "Internet Explorer".

 

On the right-window, set the following:

 

Turn off managing Phishing filter

Enabled (Automatic)

 

Prevent participation in Customer Experience Improvement Program

Enabled

 

Prevent Performance of First Run Customise settings

Enabled (Go Directly to Home Page)
