I have a board that is at least 6 years old and is severely spiking. Ive tried a new PSU, the drivers are up to date, so barring environmental interference Im going down the route of knackered board. Is it worth replacing the electronics box on the back of the board or will the school have to bite the bullet and replace.

All suggestions are welcome

How do you mean spiking? Do you mean when you draw a stright line it goes all over the show? If so that is usally caused by static. Unplug the board for an hour and plug it back in and see if it works. If so that will be the issue.

Disconnecting a board powering it down, reconnecting it and powering it back up sometimes clears it - I've never waited an hour.

If its on a usb / serial extension try it without - extensions are a common cause of the problem.

Re flashing the firmware can also help NOTE: if it goes wrong you will need a new controller.

excessive water can make them unpredictable! (overly keen cleaner) (dehumidify)

also nice to have an antistatic foam cleaner around to, I use Amberclens.

edit: also have you tried a different pointer?

When we've seen this in the past either a firmware upgrade or try and move the mains power cable as far away from the board as possible - we had a couple of installs where the transformer was actually behind the board which caused spiking.
