Oh the treat of the AV lessons! Herded in to the hall to sit in front of the one (and only) TV in the school and 'shooting the dots'* during the countdown before the programme started.

I think doom was installed as standard on most networks. Maybe by the techys lol ?

 

Any one remember RM NETWORKS ?? Jesus i wonder if there still around lol !!!

 

 

 

Back in my rebel days of computing .

 

I still remember putting the end of matches onto a floppy disk with nail varnish , putting it in the floopy drive and turn the PC off . Waiting for the next person to turn the machine on for a little fire

( stupid now i look back at it as i imagine i could have killed some one)

 

Also the time i installed a RM username logger , it basically replaced the login prompt for a fake one and logged every ones information . I didnt think it had worked untill the NM called me in a week later and told me it had logged 2 pages of usernames and passwords ! lol

 

I started out on the RM Connect 2.x networks I remember reloading one of the NT servers with 15 floppies.

My first job in education was on an RM Connect network [Curriculum] and a separate admin network which I think had O/S2 as the server O/S [or was that the back end of Connect in the early days? So long ago now I can't remember] Can anyone confirm this?

This will be beaten, I'm sure, but to start off, mine was 1980 and a Commodore PET which was brand new to the school. I think I played an adventure called "Nightmare Park", though it's a bit hazy.

Not the first time I used a computer but I did use some pretty old technology at college: Pr1me mainframe with dumb terminals [as advertised by Tom Baker in character as The Doctor]

OS/2 was the backend I'm sure as I remember we use to get the "MS Back Office" logo when we logged into the admin side of the network, although I think in Connect 2.4 (We initially had 2.3) when we upgraded that disappeared since we also upgraded to 2000 at the same time.

My first computer use was a Vic20, bought in..ooh..85/86 I reckon. About the time my co-ordination and motor issues were limiting handwriting, and this new fangled IT looked to offer a solution. Schoolwise, it was a BBC Model A - first SEN pupil on Roll, good reason to dip a toe in the water and get some IT. Spent most of my primary days showing staff how to use WordWise, feed the daisywheel (and rescue it from the inevitable cockups) and save.

 

In hindsight, I may have brought about the demise of the school's spirit duplicator...haha! Those were just ace. So, yes..85/86 I reckon.

Does anyone remember the Saturday lunchtime ITV TV show Whizz Kids? A group of nerdy kids solving crimes using their computer?

 

 

IIRC it was one of the first shows to do the old "zoom on that part of the grainy blocky picture and enhance"

They had a brand name of Gestetner, and my teacher was quite amused when, during an errand, I asked for "copies from the Gestapo machine." A seven year old is easily confused.

I remember that screensaver on Win 95/98 PC's - It was a maze and it had walls etc etc t'was brilliant - don't see it much nowadays since it's not in XP or 7.

Those bloody C64 tape decks, that always needed the azimuth tool to get them to load anything. I had a dodgy copy of a Popeye game which never, ever loaded. Thank Jebus for the cartridge games (buying them them from the Littewoods catalogue store)

 

Transporting my cherished Acorn A3010 back from John Lewis in Nottingham on the park and ride bus, whilst my Dad was paranoid about being mugged (it was Nottingham after all!)

 

Never quite made Elite, although I used to pretend as I was flying after jumping to the station that all those ships en route were boardable - I was an only child, there wasn't much entertainment!

 

Having a 4MB area on the old Acorn Econet, when everyone else just had 1MB! Being taught BBC Basic by the techie at secondary school and helping him find faults in the old coax network. Being allowed to use the schools [email protected] account, and having a key to unlock the phone port to plug in. Borrowing my Geography teachers laptop back in '98 (with permission) and finding out the Careers Library had a phone socket that dialed out

 

Racking up £300 on a monthly phone bill playing Quake 1 online - I was banned for a year (hence the Geography teachers laptop)
