Guest salan Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 (edited) The way our luck goes, we were thinking of putting a big 'X' on the roof to say 'here's the servers!! We have had in the past two years, a gas explosion next door whose shockwave wiped all the disks, a mains disruption that didn't just go off but went high then low then high then off then back on etc. All in a few mins. That really screwed things up. So that plus the other 'bad luck' we have had we totally expect the lot to be wiped by this evening! ticker Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 The horizon programme on solar storms and the sun the other night was interesting esp how the national grid gets around the issue of it potential frying the transformers, they just turn everything on across the grid

Just like DA14, where the newspapers are all "Ahh it's going to hit us!" then 2 days later "Experts say it won't hit us, but it might in 2020!" And apparently the asteroid, if it does hit us, is only expected to make a dent as big as the Tunguska Event instead of wiping us out.

CAM Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 The odds of an asteroid hitting us are slim. The odds of it then landing on a major population centre are even more miniscule. It's all doomsday panic. Just like this solar flare might require a few tweaks here and there but it won't end the world.

I was involved with the 'millenium bug stuff' and if all that work had not been done a lot of things would have gone wrong! It's like IT in general. You do all the work and everything works, so people think that you are doing nothing. They only appriciate you when it goes wrong and then they ask you why you didnt sort it before!

The solar storm actually does have an effect on us here... every time one comes up it knocks the (already iffy) wireless connection to the kitchen computer out. Although I'm sure the kitchen girls think I'm talking out my posterior when I tell them the reason...

broc Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 I am blaming the solar storm for our fire alarm going off this afternoon.... the radiation knocked out the single brain cell controlling behaviour in one of our students.... who then triggered the alarm involuntarily..... It's a lame excuse I know, but undoubtedly better than the one the kid will come up with....

If there's anything Men in Black, Doctor Who and other Sci-Fi programs has taught us, there's ALWAYS an Archalien battle cruiser or such threat that's about to wipe out life on this miserable little planet.. The only we way get on with our happy little lives is that we Do. Not. Know about it!. And then people start panicking over solar flares and apparently we all die. Such is life.
