sippo Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 A mate of mine runs his own business and has less than 15 PC's. One user is abusing the system, in particular, the internet. Any idea's how to monitor or block internet sites. Obviously wants to spend as little as possible as it is only one user taking the preverbial.
localzuk Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Set up a proxy server, block all port 80 and 443 traffic on the router except from that user, and make them all go via that proxy. You can then log etc... The other option would be to buy a router with some filtering type stuff built in.

There's no 'simple' solution that would also be cheap I'm afraid - its either get your hands dirty or pay someone to do it. Some routers, such as the DrayTek Vigor2820 have filtering and logging built in to them, but it'd mean he'd have to be comfortable replacing a router etc...

It is not the best system but would be good for what you want. +1 for opendns, it wont be able to identify the user normally because it works outside of the lan but you would be able to easily see whats being accessed. If you're doing monitoring it has to be for everybody (or at least a whole group of similar employees) so you don't leave the door open to a claim of victimisation or similar.
