installing it on a tablet and a laptop sitting side by side, just spent 5 mins cursing at the laptop trying to touch the screen and it not responding.. oops.

 

How does the start 'menu' thing look with regards to icons?

 

Has anyone tried to install apps like Office 2010 and Adobe CS5 etc? How does it sort all those icons?

Well I've found one thing I like- mounting ISOs direct from Explorer. As for the rest ... I'm still playing.

 

I hope Server 8 isn't like this. Touch enabled Server Manager - the horror!

 

Edit - The Start "menu" won't appear whilst installing software!

Install?! How the hell do I get the Run box up?!

 

I've accidently found it. Right click on the bottom left corner and you get a menu up. A quick way to get to control panel too :)

Installed it on a ntablet that we brought last year from Novatech

 

Sadly res is at 1024 x 600, so had to hack it to run at 1024 x768

 

VERY disppointed that I can't sign in to the music, video xbox apps. It's only allowed in the us and I think three othe countries. May I ask why?, the UK is enabled for all the zune and xbox services, just cant see why this as been disabled. :(

 

Gusse I will have to wait for that.... I did manage to actually get the music store etc to run, change my location to USA in the windows settings. Just will not let me log on because my Windows Live ID account is a UK account, not a USA one.

 

Next step - get work to buy some nice tablets (slate of course) with docks, wireless keyboard and mouse. I'll say the same one has the Windows Devloper units, they have a nice i5 in it! best speced one I have seen, but they will not be cheap through.

how do you shutdown / restart from the desktop?

I'm sure there is a quicker way, but these work for me...

 

Restart = Windows Key + i, then Up arrow, Enter, Up arrow, Enter

Shutdown = Windows Key + i, then Up arrow, Enter, Up arrow, Up arrow, Enter (or press the power button ;) )

I cant even get the 'right click down in the very very very bottom left corner of the screen to get the menu to pop up' to work on a tablet, even with a stylus..

Have you tried accessing Settings from the Charms menu on the right? This would be probably easier on a tablet.

You swipe your finger from the right. Surely that works on your tablet? :confused:

 

The equivalent keyboard shortcut is Windows Key + C. Moving the mouse to the top right corner of the screen also opens the Charms menu on a laptop/desktop.

No .Net 3.5 although it volunteered to download and install that 'feature' for me.. and actually managed to do it after a few tries saying the net was broken despite IE thinking otherwise... sadly my very own start menu-like app I was getting that for so I could nail it to the desktop taskbar in lieu of a start menu doesn't like Windows 8 (shell32 interop or LNK format changes or something I can't be asked to go debug). With a mouse in one hand flipping back and forth to metro via a Windows key, r-clicking and then clicking All Apps to get to a useful start menu doesn't work for me either, and no end of psuedo-erudite-spin-waffle from MS about how Exciting It Is[tm] will make me happy about being forced to work with two very different interfaces on PC/Laptop.

Oh.. so there is a Windows key alternative.. for me it's throw your mouse pointer *below* (off screen) the left hand corner then left-click, so you might be out of luck with a stylus.

dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /Source:d:\sources\sxs

 

sorted .net for me as i couldn't seem to get it to download via the auto thing.

a fiddly tablet menu system to launch an app - which takes you OUT of the desktop to do so.

You are meant to pin your most frequently used applications to the taskbar if you are primarily working on the desktop. Microsoft have even given you room for one more icon by removing the Start button :)

 

I think they've screwed the pooch. No enterprise is going to want this.

Enterprises typically do not like anything new (as demonstrated by their love of XP + IE6). Why should Microsoft care about what they want, when they could be making billions more each month selling stuff designed for the average consumer (like Apple)? :confused:

how do you exit out of a metro app? they take over the full screen..

 

eg just tried to open a pdf attachemtn from an email and it opened metro pdf reader and the only way i could find to exit was Alt+F4 ..

On a touchscreen, drag down from the top edge all the way to the bottom edge.

 

Don't think there is a way to do it with the mouse. So far to me it looks like touch will be fine, and (semi-proficient) keyboard users will be fine, but mouse users really get screwed.

Ive got this laptop configured pretty nicely and Im gonna use this as my main laptop for a while. The type of stuff I do (browsing/ email / RDP / file transfers / etc) I am doing fine with this current setup.

 

I havent even needed to go to the start menu, but I have removed all the metro apps from it and pinned just my wanted apps.

 

But when a metro app does open yeh, Alt+F4 is the only way to kill it that Ive found.

 

Ive not really given it a proper test run on the tablet yet will make some time tomorrow to play with it more.

There are several other ways...

 

  • Press Windows Key + D to go back to the desktop. The Metro app will then be suspended.
  • Hold down Windows Key + Tab to bring up a list of your Metro apps on the left. Right-click the one(s) you don't want and click close.
  • Install a different PDF viewer (Nitro PDF Reader, Sumatra, Adobe Reader etc.) and associate PDFs with this app instead in the desktop.

It's running fine on the RM Slate/Pegatron Masterpad (although you do have to install the Bluetooth drivers in compatability mode for W7). It also seems a lot slicker than the developer preview version with a lot more 'shiny' now as standard.

My one big bugbear is that the screen auto-rotation still does not work and you have to use the Millenium app (PITA) to do this. Otherwise I'm quite impressed so far in W8 as a slate OS, but I've not yet set it up as a VM to try out it's desktop prowess.

A piece of advice for the RM Slate though is that you should install the following of their drivers:

 

Pegatron ACPI

Realtek HD Audio

Bluetooth/Wireless LAN (in W7 compatability mode)

Millenium

Chrontel 7036 (HDMI encoder chip)

Pegatron ADXL346

Broadcom VD920H (HD decoder chip)

 

Leave the other drivers as standard as they are newer than those offered by RM and seem to work just fine.

You can obtain the drivers from here: RM Slate 100 driver collection (Microsoft Windows 7 - 32 bit) [M11JB / 0ALC269 / 0GMA500 / AR9002 / AX88772]

cheers for the key shortcuts. Yeh i just chucked adobe reader on it stright away.

Just finally installed Windows 8 Server and (you've guessed it) no start menu there either.....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh

 

Why do i need big tiles for each option on a server???
