Well we're all supposed to be running Server Core soon anyway... :)

while i see the advantage of core it does mean that to do much more than delete files (yes i know command is better than that but its a pain) you need to take up 2 pcs server and a n other workstation surely its better to have a dedicated console only admins can use?

and i shudder to think doing user management via a touch screen think i would rather remember dsadd commands lol

How is that any different to using Remote Desktop to administer a server? I haven't sat at the local console of a server in years, they are all in a different room.

its not but i often use the console as either pcs are in use or in some cases id have to go get a laptop from a trolley hope its charged etc its just easier to have a console nobody else uses

Suits me :)

Akshully haven't they promised some intermediate server version, 1/2 way between core and full GUI and said that's what we should use?

Apart from the new copy dialogue and the task manager it doesn't look like anything else has improved on the desktop....

Just had installed it on a spare Dell Optiplex 760 here.

All I can say is 'ugh' !

I work in IT and I can't 'use' it - it's terrible. Is it time to change career because of this?

Microsoft have even given you room for one more icon by removing the Start button :)

I'll be using that space to pin an icon either with "Start" written on it or a curiously close resemblance to the Win7 start button if I have to make significant use this OS on a desktop/laptop (what I was essentially trying to do last night)

Had a play with it on a desktop after work today but it was pretty hard going. I can see it working OK on a tablet but as a desktop OS if feels too dumbed down and lacking in functionality. Granted you can go back to the 'desktop' view but this feels like it's been bolted on as an afterthought.

On the plus side the mail/skydrive 'cloud' integration at OS level is a welcome feature.

Whilst it might help MS fight off Apple's dominance of the tablet market but I can't quite imagine how it's going to fit in with our existing school desktop/laptop infrastructure at the moment! When the Windows Vista/7 beta's were released I started using them on my main desktop at home pretty much straight away but Windows 8 at it stands leaves me wondering if I'll ever want to use it on a desktop?

Hopefully some of the changes prior to release will make it a bit more desktop friendly

It's like XBox Live glued onto Windows 7. I really wasn't expecting it to be so hard to use and disjointed.

How true. The golden rule of interface design is consistency, something you don't get as it flip-flops between what are effectively two styles of interface. I have a feeling we're going to ignore this release, as we did with Vista.

It would be nice if they were in pdf or .docx that I could actually print and read through..

I find technet is really hard to read with everthing is hyperlinks to the next part..

Painfully obvious that watching that windows 8 v Ipad video that windows 8 is designed for tablets, and this is basically windows 7 with tablet features tacked on, optimised for running on lower spec hardware.

Maybe should've been called windows 7 tablet edition... majority of the new features are useless really for desktops imo.

Ribbon on file explorer too, actually didn't mind that so much

Vista 2.0.

What's the difference between Win 8 consumer preview and regular Win 8?

Are there any missing/locked features?

Can you use it as a permanent OS replacement?

It will be time limited like the other CTPs and will also probably be faster than the RTM like 7, 7 CTP/beta flew compared to actual 7 which bloated something horrific so TBH W8 CTP will probably be a better OS than W8 RTM in terms of performance. Stability will go to the RTM though.

Hmm. Decisions, decisions...

Downgrade to Vista... or upgrade to Vista 2.0...

Stability isn't a massive factor. If anything, unstability would force me to become a better tech.

What a load of s@{t. Time to learn linux then.

Say what now?

It can be helpful, the issues I found in 7 beta were merely cloaked and hidden in the RTM for the most part and took a good 3 months to shake loose after release. I would not call it Vista 2.0 though, TBH I am not a fan of the metro start for mouse users, it stinks of removing the disk drive when 95% of people were still using it but for speed and resource usage as well as all the things that the *nix crowd have been bitching about for the past decade (footprint, universal html5, weirdy gadget things) it is a much more advnced OS than 7.

I will probably be installing and using it around the beta stage and looking to roll it out around 6-12 months after release school wide unless there are any massive showstoppers. The beta is there for a reason and usually gives you about a year of grace to mess before its really time to get it installed, well unless you are a hold back environment in which case your probably still running XP and always will be at this stage.
