Network instant message

Afternoon fellows,

 

I would like to get a program for Students Services so they can send instant message to the computer of teachers who have not taken the register on time. We are a CC4 school and the console has facilities to send instant message that will pop up on the user screen regarless of what they do, however I don't want to grant them access to the RM Console. Do you guys use a program to send net messages?

agree SIMS has a function to send a message to teachers who have not done their registers

...or theres something called Openfire. I've only had a very quick play with it!

Yeap, SIMS do send messages but they pointless as teacher who need to receive them most are not logon to SIMS. We want the message to bang on the screen when they are in the middle of doing the ppt to the kids. Currently, the ladies in students services have to walk a few miles a week to trace teachers who neglec taking the register

Or, how about a member of SMT to beat the teacher round the head with for not complying with the law and registering children as they should? Drag 1 or 2 through a disciplinary and it'll soon cease to be an issue.

 

I think this is a management issue rather than a technological one.

That depends on having the messenger service enabled though. That's been disabled by default since XP SP2 and isn't included with Vista and above.

 

Little-Miss's suggestion of Openfire is a good one, it's a locally hosted Jabbar server, an instant messaging service. You'd need that on a server and a Jabber client of your choice on the desktops.

+1 for this being a management issue, the services to reg the students are there and resonably easy to use. Your staff should be fully capiable of doing this themselves and not need a gadget to prompt them.

You can set different levels to access RMMC - Is there not an access right which only allows basic message facility?

Thanks, play with Delegate and Authorised, and only Network access did it, but it means giving them access to others things in the console, which is a no no

You are totally right, if it was my choice i will deny them access to the network in they continue missing the registers

Yep, agree with it being a management issue.

 

It isnt a legal requirement to take a register though, just to register students for two sessions a day ie at the start of the day and at the end (or start of the afternoon session).

 

Having said that, it would be really useful to be able to fire a reminder to staff who have forgotten!

How come you paid for that when Openfire and any Jabber client has the same capability for free?

The saying goes "whoever pays is at peace". When I asked for Openfire + Spark with AD integration the answer by the Jive Software was that they don't support this system anymore (though as you know it is still available). The solution was somewhre on the forums, but the level of tweakig AD for getting Openfire + Spark automatic logon is far too high for me. I advised the school to pay for this piece of kit that does at the integration at the click on a button, and once teachers logon they cannot scape/neglect the messenger, option to exit is greyed out. You can even see who is online/offline, can't remember now if Spark had that feature as well?

 

It provides other functionaliites like bulletin and share files but at the moment I have disabled all of this and we only use it for chatting.

I pay for microsoft licensing and the windows servers are a pain in the ar*e, whereas my linux servers just work unless i break them! We pay for sims and it breaks itself paid for doesn't always mean best!

Openfire here all the way - Very easy to setup and integrates with AD - as soon as a user logs in it logs them into the client!, the server was very easy to setup and it's all free and lots of features!
