zag Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 We have a few 64bit laptops now but I have a small problem with the shared menu icons Basically Sims 64bit has a different location to Sims 32bit "C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS .net\Pulsar.exe" "C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net\Pulsar.exe" So how do people do this on a shared start menu? I've got 2 icons at the moment but its not ideal.
3s-gtech Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I use two shared Start Menus with WMI filters deciding who sees them. 64 bit (just Windows 7) machines get one, 32 bit (Windows 7 and XP) the other. Little more to look after, but works fine.
wesleyw Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 If its Windows 7 could you not just use a symbolic link to the 64bit *.exe back to the 32bit location so set up a symbolic link to point at the 64bit one then one shortcut would work for either. Wes
wesleyw Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 How to create symbolic link in windows 7 « Windows 7 Home For more info. Wes
zag Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 We have a mix of windows 7 32/64bit and windows xp so I guess that wont work on the xp machines?
cromertech Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I used a batch file and sims.ini to specify the install location for it to Program File whatever the architecture. ini [setup] SIMSDirectory=\\SIMS-NEW\SIMS\SIMS SIMSSetupsDirectory=\\SIMS-NEW\SIMS\SIMS\SETUPS SIMSDotNetDirectory=C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net [installationLogs] SIMSApplicationSetup.exe=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\SIMSApplicationSetup.log SIMSInfrastructureSetup.exe=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\SIMSInfrastructureSetup.log batch start /wait q:\sims\setups\simsinfrastructuresetup.exe -a {QuietMode} {SIMSWorkstation} start /wait q:\sims\setups\SIMSAMPARKSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} [sIMSDirectory]="R:\SIMS" [sIMSDotNetDirectory]="C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net" start /wait q:\sims\setups\simsapplicationsetup.exe /S {QuietMode} [sIMSDirectory]="R:\SIMS" [sIMSDotNetDirectory]="C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net" start /wait q:\sims\setups\simsmanualsetup.exe /S {QuietMode} [sIMSDirectory]="R:\SIMS" [sIMSDotNetDirectory]="C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net" start /wait xcopy Q:\SIMS\connect.ini "c:\program files\sims\sims .net" /y start /wait xcopy Q:\SIMS\SIMS.ini "C:\Windows" /y The install location makes no difference to the way the application works, it's only a folder after all. 1
wesleyw Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 (edited) Do you use XP 64bit? If not you would only have to do it on the 64bit Windows 7 machines. Wes Edited January 20, 2012 by wesleyw Typo
sparkeh Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Currently I use GPPs to send out the shortcuts to both "C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS .net\Pulsar.exe" and "C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net\Pulsar.exe" If the object isn't there the shortcut isn't applied. Puts errors in the app log but it works and we will be all 64bit soon so not to bothered that it isn't exactly elegant.
