Automated Lock AND Log off

Hi Folks,

 

I've been able to find out how to do an automated lock (Require password on screensaver, set through GPO)... that's fine and working well.

 

What I'd like to be able to do is extend that so:

 

1) User is inactive for XX minutes, screensaver/lock is triggered

2) User doesn't unlock for a furter XX minutes, they are automatically logged off (yes, losing any unsaved work - they have all been told that locking is to be used for short periods, i.e. a quick visit to the loo)

 

Can anyone think of an easy way to administratively do this please?

There isn't anything 'built-in' to my knowledge that can do this, but you can force users to logoff when their time expires.

 

How will you be able to tell whether or not a user has left it for 5 mins or 5 hours? The better solution would be to not allow users to lock their computers at all, so they're forced to save work and logoff.

What about two scheduled tasks that run at logon:

 

1) run only if idle for more than XX minutes: Lock computer

2) run only if idle for more than YY minutes: Log off (forced)

 

Both set to stop if the machine isn't idle, and repeat the task every XX minutes?

 

Shouldn't be *too* resource heavy?

I think that there is a product/option available from Data Synergy (not my company so please do not hold me to this!) which could do exactly what you want. They created a screensaver to ensure users do not leave machines logged in / locked. Have a look:

If you're serious about this you need something like the Bluetooth Proximity Lock Utility which will do this automatically when you leave the workstation.

Gonna look at a tool called autologoff by wizardsoft. Seems to be a nice solution. gpo based.
