Duplicate File Finder

Not sure if this is in the right place but I daresay someone will move it if not.

 

I've just had a quick look through our shared areas and I'm convinced that we have resources duplicated here there and everywhere ... it's far too much trouble for people to remember where they put stuff, far better to put it on again than find the original.

 

Anyway, what I would like to know is, has anyone found a decent duplicate file finder (preferably free)? I want to be able to have a bit of a clear out by removing files that have been placed in several different locations

If you are using Windows Server 2008 you can use File Resource Manager which generates reports and hyperlinks showing all the duplicate files and there locations.

To reignite an old thread, we've been using Auslogics Duplicate File Finder but I've been wondering if there's any software out there that would not only delete the duplicate files but also put a shortcut in the location of the deleted file to a UNC path of the retained file. Not sure if this is even possible but would be a good feature.

Server 2012 has de-duplication built in, if you can move to that (or enable it if you have). Saved us a massive amount of space. Note that some people have had performance issues with 2012/R2 file servers, but not experienced them here.
