SANYO PLC-XE32 Projector shuts down overheating ?

Problems...Problems...Problems....

 

We have about 10 of these Sanyo PLC-XE32 projectors. All installed in the same year (2008)

In the last few months they have started randomly shutting off. It seems like it's overheating somehow.

 

Luckily one was still under warranty so we sent it back. (to Sanyo repairer TP Matrix)

They said it needed a new set of fans under warranty and a Deep Optical clean at £95 extra.

(I suspect they were just cashing in)

 

So we had 3 that were out of warranty that was cutting out every 10 mins.

With nothing to lose we stripped on right down, quite easily.

There was not much dust or debris inside at all.

The fans were surprisingly clean and no signs of heat build-up anywhere.

No optics were dirty or melted and all seemed to be OK.

(We have seen projectors that are older than 5 years in a worse state that didn't cut out and jsut needed a clean)

 

So the question is, is there a inherent design fault on these projectors?

Do you have this model and is that showing the fault?

How did you fix it?

is there something in there with a heatsink that needs repasting?

Are the fans running slowly due to a tired fan psu?

Is the thermal sensor accurate?

Are the lamps close to hours as they will work hotter and less efficiently as they get older?

Fans clean and spinning up fine (not noisey)

All heatsinks and heat ducting pathways are OK.

Bulb is brand new. (we always try that first)

Sensors are clean andc working as expected. (barring testing them under heat with a meter)

testing them under heat with a meter would be my next option... do you have a known good sensor to check against?

No we don't have a good sensor unfortunatly.

Can't remove a good projector either to swap parts.

Although Sanyo say fans ??

Is that just a guess by Sanyo, I wonder, or a known fault.

Not very good that these projectors all show the same fault after 3 years.

I have two of these in a primary school we support, One kept over heating every ten or so mins, cleaned the filter but it kept happening, I found that there is another filter on the back of the projector which I hadn't seen, cleaned it and not had a problem since. If you have had to take them apart its probably not the same problem, but seems to sound the same

it's not just sanyo, I had a batch of NEC NP310g which a very similar thing, that came down to a thermal sensor on the side of the lamp housing becoming highly sensitive.

Well we stripped down the projector, cleaned it and put it back together.

It is still teh same fault. Powers off after 10 mins and fans spin up high.

Classic overheating. Not cost effective to send for repair.

Yes, the Sanyo "Deep Optic Clean" is PURELY cashing in and I will challenge anyone from any Sanyo authorised dealer to argue that. I've done the "deep clean" myself which took roughly half an hour and that was being particular careful with screws etc. (It wasn't mine/our schools ) I have honestly thought about taking Sanyo to task on this because it's obviously a design issue and they're more than happy. The last chap I spoke to even tried to make it sound like a good deal by waiving the £45 inspection fee... (this becomes part of the £95 if it needs doing)

I totally agree. It is a design fault on these projectors.

And the deep optical clean is a swizz. It does not clear the fault with sutting down.

Either the fans loose efficiency or the Thermister becomes faulty and cuts out.
