MAGIX MusicMaker 17? Any good?

So, I've been asked to find out about this piece of software for my old school and I've had a look around and found deployment info thin on the ground.

 

Also, I've found a number of posts and threads saying that the older versions (v12 to be specific) were a PITA, crashing etc...

 

Has anyone got any experience with this version, and if so, is it good experience?

Get 18...works well with W7 networks and previous, so good for future proofing.

In my opinion it's a glorified version of Movie Maker. We use version 14 and it does freeze / crash quite often. As nephilim said - version 18 is the latest version available. We have bought from Counterpoint in the past and they do the slightly older versions at good prices or they have done for us in the past.

I realised I mis-spelled in the last post

 

It is best to have it pre-installed with all settings you need on an image, rather than deploy...

 

Deploying is smooth, however you have to input all settings manually on each machine, whereas if it is preloaded into the image, with the settings you want, you save yourself easily 5 mins per machine (if you think a room of 30 machines, that's about 2 hours 30 mins saved, which can be used for other things)

Hardly smooth then, is it? We have Magix Music Studio 2005 Deluxe and it's an absolute PITA to deploy on XP. This has to be installed manually on each PC due to the copy-protection used on the installation disc and then we have to configure all of the settings.

 

When I contacted Magix, they said their software isn't supported on networks, which is another way of saying they can't be arsed to create an MSI or an installer that can be automated. They certainly won't be getting another penny from our school until they get their act together.

It is smooth in the sense that it deploys as an MSI fine...but as I said inputting settigs is a bit of a task! Which is why its best to roll it out with an image. You could always keep it as a local machine install.

We are looking at investing in a later version of Magix, the free version likes some of our Windows 7 computers but not all! Is there a site licence and any idea of the cost? (PM me if you prefer)
