You can turn the visible line off, which does make them harder to spot (although it does still show you what you drew when you get it wrong, which would give the observer a clue). Again, I think it comes down to who you think is likely to steal your phone, or who you're trying to protect it from - I'm not too worried if my wife, friends or colleagues know my unlock pattern; I'm more interested in stopping someone nicking it off me in the street and phoning India* for an hour before I can get it blocked. * no racial slurs intended, I pick India as that was the destination of the calls when my Skype got hacked recently.

Microsoft have patented it, so I doubt we will see it being used on other OSs. The technology will feature in Windows 8 as Picture Password, both in its standard desktop and mobile Metro interfaces. Users will be able to select an image of their fancy and then make several touch or mouse-based gestures over certain parts of the image as a way to log in. For example, if a user picks an image of a person's face, the gestures could be a tap on either eye and a semi-circular movement around the mouth. More detailed pictures could end up like a Where's Wally? book, tapping or clicking various hard to find objects on the screen. The technology will only recognise taps, straight lines and circles, but that will be sufficient for creating detailed and unique picture-based passwords. Eventually more complex movements like the familiar screen pinch might be added to give users greater control over their password choices. (Source) do we really think that someone who nicks your phone is likely to go to the effort of removing the SD card, plugging it into a computer, finding a picture, printing it out and then using that to unlock the phone, then read your emails and access Facebook as you? If I stole a Galaxy Nexus that is what I would do. Most thieves wouldn't know about the face unlock feature in ICS, so would probably just sell the phone. Im sure I read there isnt an SD card slot on this phone. There isn't, but you could still connect it up to a computer to see photos stored on it.

Don't forget isnt ICS the first Android to have proper encryption for everything you do on the phone? So until you actually unlock it, it remains encrypted? or was that opted out this time around again?

So until you actually unlock it, it remains encrypted? or was that opted out this time around again? lets be fair, if your phone is stolen, chances are it isn't because they want to use it as their own, they want to sell it. and if you wanted to use the phone after buying it stolen (hypothetically), then you could just boot into the bootloader and reset to factory defaults. if i buy your phone thats been stolen, i'm not really concerned about your photos, i've just got your £300 phone for £30.

You just spend £30 on a brick. but the problem with people who will probably rely solely on face recognition as security is they are less likely to have had it disabled after. it will be reported to police and claimed on insurance and thats about it.

This reminds me, anybody who is using Lookout should know that at some point, remote locking became a premium feature. They didn't advertise that one!

If you're managing to fill 8/16gb (which most phones come with as standard now anyway) of onboard space, what are you doing?

I have 11GB of MP3s. That is of course before I start taking photos or videos. Also, some of the phones which say they have 8GB storage actually just have 1GB onboard and an SD slot - that is how it was with my HTC Sensation, anyway.

Train journeys are a few hours on average. So 10 albums worth of music would see you through that, or a couple of movies. Option is nice, 6 billion options is a bit much

I have all my music on my phone all the time - seems much better.

I have all my music on my phone all the time - seems much better. As I said, personally I am never in the situation where I would be using my phone non stop for more than 20 minutes. If I'm driving I don't use it, if I'm at home I have a PC, same for work. So I can't see myself in a situation where I'd need 11GB of music to choose from. Can't speak for anyone else but to me it seems overkill.

Fair enough it wouldn't be much use to you, but looking at it from my own perspective: I don't drive, I catch the bus or train everywhere. Spend at least 2 hours a day on/waiting for the bus/tram, regularly visit family 'oop north which is about a 2 hour journey each way... I could just put on my phone what I want each day/week, but for convenience it's easier to put everything I might want on there - with SD cards so cheap these days, why not?
