I recently began using this and it was a promising program. I used it to wake and shutdown the computer lab each day. I never did get the internet blocking to work, it locked up machines when I used the "Get Attention" feature, and it occasionaly crashed on the server. But I liked the potential of it. The layout was clean, it had a low learning curve and of course, it was free. I'd like to see it go opensource and see it grow and thrive once again.

Maybe our edugeek owner could offer to take over the code until someone is willing to take up development again?

The reason at the moment seems to be lack of funds to host the site can we not do someting about that or host the files?

Kev for various reasons has decided he will not open code up and that is he choice.

 

As for hosting there is something under way to try and get Kev's permsion to host program i will let you know what happens over it.

 

Issue is not pure hosting issue it is about the fact that paid clients that Kev uses to pay for work on Lanview and other programs have gone so he just can't afford to work on it.

Unfortunately there was always the option to do that and hardly anyone did.. I'd wager, with the greatest of respect that only one if any of the techs on here ever contributed financially so he's seen hardly anything.

 

In all honesty I think he'd be far better considering a charging structure either for support or actual access. It'd increase his income considerably and ironically people would be a heck of a lot more appreciative than they might have been when it was free..

 

... and I'm basing this directly on my experiences of writing mod code for phpBB2. It's weird but free mean't demanding freeloaders and charging meant a little respect and patience.. weird but true.

I have but its not for me i am involved in a big project and it need a web disigner to set it up. php sql is a must. But i dont know how long it will take. If you are in contact with him pm me and i will give you my number so he can contact me and i will see what i can do.

I to think that if they should open source it, I wanted to put it into Karoshi but couldnt for a few reasons.

I've had several offers for hosting which is very kind, but there are a number of reasons why I cannot take these offers up - which I will not go into. (I will reply to those offers in the fullness of time, but havn't had a chance yet.)

 

In terms of charging for the software, this was always a non-starter. If I charge, I'll have to support the product. I simply don't have the time as I work full-time.

 

I'm quite open to admit, I'm disapointed with the lack of support from the users of LanView. I personally would be happy to donate £5 or £10 to a project if it was a product I use all the time - and I don't think this is too much to ask. However, since my other business paid for it, i've not really pushed for donations. Now my business is finishing, lack of funds will definately mean I can't afford to pay for the website.

 

If the community donates enough to continue the website, then I will continue to develop the software. I can't be fairer than that.

I’ve only discovered Lanview recently, I don’t mind one bit making a donation, only have it one test lab but so far have been impressed with it, much better than other "free" progs out there..

I've only just started to use the software, but so far I find it fantastic. I've only got it installed in a couple of suites here so far as a little test bed, but I am only waiting on the go ahead to roll it out network wide. If that's the case I will certainly attempt to get a little money from my boss to help towards Kev's costs.

 

Would be a terrible shame to see it disappear.
