Hightower Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Picked up my new motor this morning, a '96 plate Nissan Largo Highway Star (Jap Import). Getting converted to a camper for the winter months. It is a beast, absolutely love it. Already pimped it out with a new DVD stereo system.

Hightower Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 Well, the varnish has dried and I've fixed the bed wood to the frame. My pops is going to the indoor market today where apparently there's a seller selling foam. Not a lot I can do to it today with weather so we've decided to have a jaunty to the Gibside at Rowlands Gill to walk the dog. Oh, was up at the crack of dawn today ripping the turbo timer out. Read up last night that it's a grey area on the legality of them in this country, and a lot of people claimed that if the police weren't bothered, the insurance certainly would be in the event of an accident, and void instantly void the insurance on seeing it. Not sure how much truth there is in this, but won't be using it anyway so thought far better be safe and get rid. If I ever hammer the turbo it's meant to be far better to let it settle down for the last few miles of the journey anyway than to let it idle at a stand still.
Hightower Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Well, after troubleshooting problems starting (not bad, just takes 2 attempts to start on colder mornings) I tried cleaning out the air seperator on the intake. Has anyone done this to their motor? If not, I highly recommend it. Mine was clogged up with years worth of carbon, and I couldn't quite see how the air was even making it through. Gave it a good cleanup with white spirit, but it back on and I can now actually hear the air being sucked in (as well as what seems a healthy boost in power). Hope to see some return on MPG too. Honestly, 5 minute job, get it done and see the improvement. Tonight I'm going to try and get at the EGR valve for a cleanup, and also play with the pump timing - if these don't work then I guess it's time to replace the glow plugs or the relay. Pain in the backside working on it in the dark nights, but really don't want to wait until weekend. At least the engine is accessible from the cab so I'm tooked up away from the elements.
